Not for Love mares at the sales

I know that Not For Love stood in Maryland, and that he is the dam sire of California Chrome. Before CC, I really hadn’t heard a bunch about him as a broodmare sire- however, I am NO expert. It is interesting to me that two of his daughters have brought impressive prices at the sales this time. Fool in Love for 1 Million, barren, and For Royalty, 2.1, in foal.

What can those who know this stuff share about Not For Love as a sire, and broodmare sire? I realize that some of the good ones do escape Kentucky, but I’d love to hear more of the story on all of this…

Thanks!

Not For Love mares are definitely having a moment. But in the case of the two mares that sold so well at Keeneland, Not For Love had little to do with it–except of course for the genetic material he contributed that made those mares such superior producers.

For Royalty has 4 foals of racing age and 4 stakes horses, including G1 winner Constellation.
Fools In Love had numerous updates since the catalog was printed, most notably that her 2yo, Seahenge won a G2 and ran 3rd in a G1, both in England. Wonderful timing to grab buyers’ attention!

It was the mares’ produce records that made their prices possible, not their sire.

I think their produce records have something to say for Not For Love, though. they were very nice mares, with decent records themselves with great offspring.

Not for Love was a beautiful, well conformed stallion and his offspring certainly took after him in that regard. Great balance, good bone, excellent shoulders and that pretty front end and neck set. His daughters offer a very neat pedigree in today’s market being that his dam was by Northern Dancer himself and he was a son of the great Mr Prospector. Those bloodlines are found much farther back in pedigrees at the sales today. His race record left some to be desired but he was the leading sire in MD for many years (10 I believe) so he was quite successful at stud and therefore no surprise that his offspring and their offspring have done so well. Count me in on the Not For Love bandwagon.

Agree with everything above. Not For Love was a classic good regional sire - TONS of pedigree but lacked enough race record to stand in a major market. In his case, the old adage “blood will tell” really rang true.

He was a product of the Phipps family’s amazing breeding program. His dam, Dance Number, was a Grade 1 winner and he is a full brother to Eclipse Champion 2yo and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Rhythm, and graded SW Get Lucky. Get Lucky in turn is the dam of 4 SWs, 3 graded, including G1 winner Girolamo. Get Lucky is also the second dam of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and G1 winners Bluegrass Cat, Imagining, and Got Lucky, third dam of G1 winner Callback, etc., etc.

His second dam was champion 2YO filly and major producer Numbered Account, by Buckpasser. Numbered Account was also the dam of multiple G1 winner and major sire Private Account and another top Maryland-based sire, Polish Numbers.

Actually several KY farm tried to buy and relocate him after he started putting ups some serious numbers. I tried on behalf of clients. I tried to buy him from the Phipps when her retired from racing for a top Argentine farm. Submitted the highest offer but they wanted him to stay in the states.

The only reason NFL didn’t end up standing in KY was because Richard Golden who owns Northveiw retained controlling interest in him when he was syndicated. At the time Northview (MD) was relatively new having bought a section of the historic Windfields Farm where Northern Dancer stood among other “greats” of the time. They needed a “flagship horse” and NFL became that. He commanded $20,000+ for a number of years. Pretty darn respectable for a regional stallion that only cost a few hundred thousand to purchase. Golden wasn’t going to let him go. Pretty impossible to replace. We bred to him a number of times at $15,000 to $20,000.

probably one of the most underrated sires in a market where “Kentucky” spells everything. I’d be jumping on the ship to get anything out there by Not For Love. He was pensioned in 2015. Would certainly be something neat to breed from

I’ve got an 8 year old mare that we sold, and had to literately rescue as a 4 year old when she got dumped and ended up in a terrible situation. Beautiful horse. Nice jumper. But she’s just been sitting around the last couple of years. Where are you located?
