My mare was supposed to be in season this week. I had her ultrasound on Friday and they found one 33 mm follicle (other ovary was quiet) and said she would probably be ready to breed in 3 days. In the meantime, she’s showing absolutely no interest in my gelding. Normally she would be all over him. I’m assuming she’s skipping this cycle?
Unfortunately my vet is not in the office tomorrow so the soonest we could recheck with ultrasound is Tuesday.
Would this be considered an anovulatory follicle and what is the difference between that and a luteinized unruptured follicle? She was winking at my gelding on Friday and acting like she might be coming in season but now has no interest and raises a hind leg (she doesn’t kick but is clearly saying leave me alone).
Should I bring her back to the vet Tuesday or just wait for her to come back in season on her own? Would prostaglandin be useful at this stage, as I read it should not be used if the follicle is greater then 3 cm?
Since she’s an older mare, we are using live cover but the stallion owner isn’t very close by so I would like to avoid the extra driving, if she’s definitely not receptive.
I’m just using my regular vet at this time. I can see a Repro vet, if necessary but it would depend on when they can get me on the schedule.
She has a clean culture and doesn’t retain fluid after breeding (which is all good). Just her age may make it harder for her to catch. The last time we bred her she had one anovulatory cycle in March or April. We bred her May 6th and she caught.
