NoVA: split rail fencing costs?

Anyone purchased split rail fencing materials in NoVA recently?

I have a project in mind, of course it’s Sunday, places are closed, others don’t have split rail stuff…

Around here they are around $9-10 per. Verses $5+ for a 16’ oak board. They can be bought used in pretty good shape for a couple of bucks each.

Wondering most about the posts (not so much thinking about the rails yet).

In our area of Northern Virginia, the split rail fences don’t hold up. Our neighbors are forever putting rails back in place and replacing broken posts.

AKB, I think that happens to it everywhere it’s used. I just need components though, not actually planning on using it for fencing.

We’ve got a lot of split rail that came with this farm that hasn’t been replaced yet. It is over 25 years old. There are problem sections but given its age it’s to be expected. The quality of materials used and more importantly the quality of installation makes all the difference. It is an expensive fence to put up. The materials are $$$ and it requires more labor and expertise. If the posts are drilled instead of being “pounded” you can pretty much expect there will be problems. Installers can be pretty lazy about tamping post securely so they don’t shift over time and rails coming loose.

Having shopped it a bit today, I admit to being surprised at how much it costs here! Lucky thing is, I don’t need much of it. Thank goodness! I will not be building any paddocks of it, that’s for sure!
