Oh, had me worried too about the poor dog dying!
What a great picture! When I was a little kid my dad made a big ole snow sculpture like that, only in his case it was a Polarbear (we call them Icebear)! Your posts have reminded me in so many ways of my childhood and make me feel all nostalgic and a little homesick.
Anna Crew, this is the best thread I have read in months! Great work! I am enjoying seeing your horse change in your pictures, and I am glad he is enjoying his new home! His colics have me a little bit nervous and I will be glad when you get that solved.
You go, girl! What a great, great job you and Peter are doing with your horse!
Happy Easter Anna, Peter and Puika…
…and tiny kitten, St. Bernard and Anna’s momma! I just got caught back up with your adventures from a few pages back, and read them out loud to Mr. Allpurpose over coffee this Easter morning. He loved the story and the pics, and was very worried when I read about your “new” dog  probably not making it very long…until we saw the picture:yes: We were relieved and laughed at your joke.
The pics of Peter in the snow, bareback, reminds me that the 7 inches of snow we got this Good Friday is good for SOMETHING, and wished that I had embraced it (instead of cursing it ) and jumped on my Tommy bareback for a ride through the jump field. I wish I had a nice warm fur hat like Peter’s to wear, too! Nothing like a warm, fuzzy back of a large horse, a snowstorm and lots of deep snow to make the LONG winter a little warmer! Hmmm, Mr. Allpurpose sez there are other things to do to get warm during the long winter…like cuddling up in front of a warm fire with Mrs. Allpurpose!
More pics of wee kitty, please, and I’d like to send you some Peeps (a marshmallow Easter candy that some of our U.S. horses like to share with us. Perhaps you’ve read about them on other COTH threads?). If you think Puika would like Peeps, please pm me and I’ll send you some!
Allpurpose, there will be no new pictures of wee kitty as our rescue centre found mother cat and the little girl went back to rescue and I hope she will grow into a big nice cat under feline care which is way much better than ours.
(I sometimes volunteer for our local no-kill shelter that also works as rescue centre, mostly wee puppies as my pack adores them and all I must do is to feed them, the rest do our dogs)
For everybody not to get confused - overall we have 4 dogs - 3 GSD and St. Bernard, all of them rescues, St. Bernard was our last foster, very abused and emaciated 9 mo old poor breeding pup with fear agression, food agression, about 1/3 of expected weight, and so on… She stayed to recover a bit, and stayed forewer. That’s our problem - so far I had a hard fight with peter about every foster - he wants them all to stay.
We also have 7 cats - all except last from our local shelter. Last one arrived by himself about a month ago and said that he would like to live here - all our pack said the same so he stayed. (It is not like me really needed cat No 7, but we have enough space and we were not able to find from where he has come and who was his owner). He is not doing very good as he probably was hit by car, but he is very sweet cat, in his past life he had been indoor cat only, very pampered and spoiled boy. He is old cat, so he will have his retirement house here.
I really feel bad that we can not take ur horse inside to feel part of our pack He would like here - if he would be pony, he would be inside every day - we live in an old period farmhouse with brick floors in most rooms, so it would be not a big deal, indeed
No horse news - Peter is in bed resting his knee as there is all inflamed, after Easter he will go to hospital to see what they can do, and outside snow is getting deeper and deeper so poor horse is insede the box, bored to death.
Believe or not, it started to snow this morning and is still snowing now (nearly 6 pm here) and all is covered in about 1 - 2ft deep soft, fluffy and sticky snow.
We already ordered a hanging stall toy for Puika which would provide him at least some fun, but it has not arrived yet, so at present he is having fun with his fellow cow only - they are licking each other through the box wall.
We do hope that weather will start getting beter from Wednesday, but until then poor boy will be inside. Under the snow the nasty ice has established and we can not afford damage his leg - it is bad enough with Peter’s.

Off topic!
As I’m here probably the only one from Latvia, I decided to show you some pictures of our place. No horses so if moderators decide to delete this post, it will be ok.
So, if you have nothing better to do and are interested – here are some pictures, just our place, nothing special. We are outsiders – left city and decided to live our way – so far it is the best decission in my life.

Wow! Gorgeous!! Thanks for sharing Anna. It’s great to see where you all live, and the lovely critters that share the home with you and Peter. They all look so happy and content! Did you take all those pictures? You take wonderful shots.
Hope the snow doesn’t get too deep and Peter’s knee feels better soon!
yes, all pictures are mine
And here you can see pictures of proper Latvian horses – I took them last summer at our largest farming fair, so it’s even not a horse event, but you can see proper cared horses and riders of Latvia, otherwise you will get impression that all our horses here might look as poor as our beloved Puika!
These are not professional riders, these are students of our Academy of Agriculture, Vet faculcy, so riding and horses are just part of their study program.

Wonderful photos! I am really enjoying learning about life in Latvia! You have a lovely place & a wonderful “extended” family.
I am thoroughly enjoying hearing all about your horse, other animals, and life in Latvia. The pictures are gorgeous-----love your house and surrounding land. I just came across this thread last night, and I am totally enchanted.
I really enjoy your photos…What a beautiful place you have!! I’m just drooling over the last horse photos of that beautiful black…I go positively weak over black horses…sigh.must have come from the Fury (tv show) and Black Stallion days.
My…it seems that you are going positively “to the dogs”…What fun… a dog party!! All of your pet pals look loved and content. I’ve just gotten my first GSD this past year…also a rescue. Though I have loved many dogs in my life, she is undoubtedly the SMARTEST yet. Just wish I had her when younger…she’s 7 years old and was raised on a chain!! She has some fear issues and yelps (screams) loudly if I touch her sides or tail sometimes. I was bitten badly by her in the face when she first came here…now I just respect her issues and she dotes on me!! What regal looking GSD you have…I really like the looks of the first one…
Wonder if this thread could be moved to the “off course section” instead of horse care so that everyone can find it?? Mods?
Keep sending those photos.
Hope your husband recovers from that bad knee…ouch…he sounds like such a nice fellow…any man who loves animals is a catch in my eyes!!
Hi Annacrew,
Thank you so much for sharing your life with us. I love the pictures of everyone. Cedric has stolen my heart. And you are doing such a great job with Puika. I hope his ball comes soon. A bored horse in a box is no fun at all.
Keep the stories coming.
And thank you again for sharing.

My…it seems that you are going positively “to the dogs”…[/QUOTE]
Yes, I’m a dog person and have some knowledge too - that’s a reason why I’m here as I have none about horses.
I know bored horse in box is not at all good but with his still weak muscles and joints to take him out on bad ice even just for a walk would be not a wise thing as I would be not stable on my legs too. I would not be able to lead him properly so he gets as much stall actions as possible - I brushed him long time today - few minutes on one side then under his chin to other side, command move! so he steps on side to give me more space… repeated again to other side when I move around his back legs (He is not a kicker at all)…
Not much brushing done, but a bit of training and a bit of company for Puika. It’s all that can be done at present. See, snow is melting during the day, then tonight will be - 10C again, so bad ice everywhere tomorrow, and during the day it is just getting covered by next layer of water which freezes during the night. I hate this weather!
I hope it will start to improve on Wednesdy, at least we have promised that
Hi AnnaCrew,
Your house and gardens are a slice of heaven! Thanks for sharing! Puika reminds me very much of a friend’s horse. He is a Percheron/Thoroughbred cross - very much a gentle giant. I’m sure Puika knows that he has been lucky indeed. :):)
Anna, your posts warm my heart and it is so exciting to hear abotu Puika’s Progress!!!
This thread needs to be voted one of the best ever!
This thread warms my heart!
I read this thread it makes me believe love conquers all…I think the stories and pics are wonderful! You are doing a great job…enjoy him…
Thank you for sharing the photos and story. Your farm is beautiful and your animals look soooo happy. I love the picture of your family fishing at the pond…everyone is just laying in the tall grass and enjoying the day (with the stork looking on)!
My only suggestion is to be very careful with the fresh Spring grass when it arrives in your part of the world. From your photos I can see that you have an abundance of GORGEOUS grass!! It would be so easy (and tragic) for your lovely horse to founder and/or colic on such lush and plentiful grass.
Good luck and keep enjoying your wonderful animals, land, and family!
Good news!
We are so excited - there is a hope, a great hope that in few weeks time Puika will have a saddle! Wohooo! Then he will be able to have proper runs around!
Yes, grass will be a problem! Grass is ready to shoot out and when the warm weather will appear, it will be my main concern - grass is really rich here and can create colics…
But we seem to be safe for few more weeks (all is covered in snow and will be until the end of the week as a minimum) so Puika has safe hay/beet diet now. We have some patches where old grass has not been cut and probably Puika will go on these patches first as there will be less rich grass at the beginning.
But I will dig into the grass problem when it will be getting close. At present here is ankle deep snow
What is the reccomended gap between two different dewormers? Puika had Safe-guard on March 14, and now I’m tempted to give him the next one, for tapeworm. I want be sure that his tummy is free of any worms for spring.
Anna- you might consider a grazing muzzle for the grass issue or limited turnout until he gets used to it. As far as the wormers we worm every 6 six weeks. Be careful if he has never been wormed for Tapeworm before, If he has a major die off, if he has a lot of them, he could get into trouble. I would watch him carefully…
Keep the stories coming and the pics too!
Can I live with you? Or maybe just visit for a very long time?
Anna, Your home, garden and wow the grass is just breath taking! Your animals seem so happy and your shephards are just georgous (I love shephards)!
All those horses are so different than what I see here.
Where you live is so serene, do you appreciate your surroundings or is it just everyday living for you?
Imagine building after building, lots of noises and new housing developments, tons of people crowding around all the time, homeless picking through the garbage or asking you for a quarter. Weird smells, lots of traffic, theives and crooks, you have to lock your cars and house all the time… If you can imagine that, that’s where I live!
Keep the stories and pictures coming. Your showing many of us something we probably will never experience! Thank you!
I just LOVE this thread… It really is amazing that people from all over the world can connect via a horse magazine message board!
Just LOVED all the pictures Anna. You have a lovely home, and all your furry kids are great!
Good luck with Puika’s deworming program, it sounds like you are on the right track with getting him healthy!
Do let us know when the saddle arrives!
Such an interesting and uplifting thread. Thanks for sharing!!
