NSC in hay analysis

Hi everyone,
. I recently had hay tested to be able to sell to IR/Cushings/EMS horses or just horses that need a lower sugar hay. Of course, it’s the analysis that doesn’t list NSC. I called the lab and they said that NSC is calculated from the 6C sugars listed plus starch. I want to make sure this is correct since that would make the hay 9.61%NSC, but there are 5C sugars that equal 23%. Do I ignore the 5C when figuring NSC?
HAY ANALYSIS
5C sugars 23%

6C Sugars
Fructose 2.99%
Glucose 2.18%
Sucrose 0.22%
Mannitol 0.28%

Starch 4.22%

Also, is a target range for nitrate? I had that tested as well and it came back 1191 ppm which seems high?

TIA!!!

6 carbon sugars do not tell the whole story. This does not include the long chain fractions found in WSC.

Standard form of testing is done at Equi-analytical.com There are about 6 different ways to test for sugar, all with different results. Impossible to say how your sample compares to average.

Shoot. I was wondering if that was the case… I watched your video on NFC and NSC and saw that testing for WSC’s was best. So basically I need to resample and send it to equi-analytical.
Thank you!

In a link to an article in my Thryro-L thread, the vet said NSC is ESC + starch. But Katy’s website says it is WSC + starch, so now I’m confused…

That link won’t open for me…

it requires Flash Player. It used to download automatically. Sorry, I don’t know how to fix it and I can’t pay people to keep my site current any longer.
