NSC in young horse feeds

I recently inquired about the NSC% of a young horse feed that I am looking at to possibly switch for, and the company gaved me a % that is waaay out of the normal 13-30% that we usually see in other popular feed companies (Nutrena Safe-choice 22%, Triple-Crown Growth 13.9%, Blue Seal Safe-Start 24.5%). When I asked how come the % was so out of the usual seen in other companies, here’s the answer I got (that I’ve (poorly) translated in english for you):

NSC in horse feeds and supplements are not datas on wich companies linger and verify by more detailed calculations because it plays very little since the values of all grains are similar and all horse feeds are almost all made of the same ingredients. NSC are more important when it comes to forage, because many factors are to be taken in the equation. What makes datas change, is the calculation that the software do with the other components of the feed. It might be the right NSC%, but it might be not. Just like the others companies, this data (the NSC%) might be the good one, but might be not exact neither, unless they validate that the NSC % they got is good with other calculations. It also depends on how their software has calculated the NSC%.

Okay… So if I understand correctly… We cannot rely on the NSC% the companies are providing us because the way to calculate it is not reliable??? Can someone explain that to me?

Did not know Safe Choice was so high. Thanks for the heads up.
And it is the same thing with cat food. Cats have low tolerance to carbs and yet even the big names (including food sold at the Vet’s) do not list the carbs. Mostly because it is shocking high and is a barometer how much low quality filler they are using. I bet the same is with horse food, with OCD it is a big topic.

The lowest level of NSC I have found so far for young horse feeds is TC Growth. OF COURSE it is not available in Quebec. What was I thinking. LOL.

Nutrena Safe Choice shows to have a NSC of 15% according to their website. Is that information incorrect?

Seminole Perform Safe has a 9% starch. This is what I currently feed my 5.5 yr old WB cross, but I’m not sure that it’s appropriate for younger more rapidly growing horses.

This one has 22%

There are several Safe Choice products.
I use Youth and I can not even find that product. I think it is Youth in Canada and Mare and Foal in the US, but no info to confirm this.

Am I reading that chart right in the link that Triple Crown Senior is around 20% NSC? On Triple Crown’s website, I think it lists it around 11% or 9% or something like that (I can’t access their site from work).

On their website, for the Safe Choice Mare and Foal: http://www.nutrenaworld.com/products/horses/safe-choice/safechoice-mare-foal-horse-feed/index.jsp they say in the guaranteed analysis that the NSC = dietary starch (max 17%) + sugar (max 5%). Hence the 22%.

Cousin owns a feed store in Alberta. PM me if you want more info.

Ahh, I see my mistake. The Safe Choice Special Care is 15% NSC.

Ahh, I see my mistake. It’s the SafeChoice Special Care that is 15%.
