I recently inquired about the NSC% of a young horse feed that I am looking at to possibly switch for, and the company gaved me a % that is waaay out of the normal 13-30% that we usually see in other popular feed companies (Nutrena Safe-choice 22%, Triple-Crown Growth 13.9%, Blue Seal Safe-Start 24.5%). When I asked how come the % was so out of the usual seen in other companies, here’s the answer I got (that I’ve (poorly) translated in english for you):
“NSC in horse feeds and supplements are not datas on wich companies linger and verify by more detailed calculations because it plays very little since the values of all grains are similar and all horse feeds are almost all made of the same ingredients. NSC are more important when it comes to forage, because many factors are to be taken in the equation. What makes datas change, is the calculation that the software do with the other components of the feed. It might be the right NSC%, but it might be not. Just like the others companies, this data (the NSC%) might be the good one, but might be not exact neither, unless they validate that the NSC % they got is good with other calculations. It also depends on how their software has calculated the NSC%.”
Okay… So if I understand correctly… We cannot rely on the NSC% the companies are providing us because the way to calculate it is not reliable??? Can someone explain that to me?
