When I first became aware of Last Chance Corral and their “facts” about nurse mares I couldn’t believe the crap they had so many people freaking out over. It seems they’ve changed and/or deleted some of their story.
I commented on one of their FB posts calling out some of their misinformation and my post was deleted. But they left all the comments from the bleeding hearts and ‘oh i love horsies’ ‘someone please save them all’ ‘this is so cruel they should go to hell’ ‘they only care about money’ people.
One of their claims was that as soon as a TB foal is born it is taken away from it’s valuable mom and put on a nurse mare forever because the foal is not allowed on the breeding farm and then the dam is magically back in training. Really? My impression is that not only are they purposely lying to people, but they might not have any knowledge of how things work to begin with.
I can see both sides of the nurse mare argument, but in the big picture they are necessary. I do think they should be more selectively bred whenever possible in order to better the future chances for the foal. I know of a World Champion AQHA western riding or trail horse (it’s been a while!) who was a PMU baby. Another subject entirely, worse than nurse mares in my opinion, but the point is that with some forethought the byproduct became something other than a throwaway.
One thing FB can be good for is matching people who have lost a mare with people who have lost a foal. One of my FB friends posted as soon as she lost a foal and within a day she had found someone with a foal needing a mother. It can’t always work out perfectly like that, but my point is that there are people who try to help each other out which eliminates the need for a nurse mare sometimes.
