My horse was recently diagnosed with RER and MFM. I want to make sure I’m feeding him correctly. Any nutritionists you’d recommend?
I just attended a talk by Dr. Kate Echevarria in which she discussed MFM and appropriate diets for it. She’s a vet not a nutritionist but could be a good resource. She’s located in MA but may be willing to do a phone consult and she’s always been responsive to emails in my experience. Also, she’s super nice.
Dr Rachel Mottet of Legacy Equine Nutrition, and Dr Clair Thunes of Clarity Equine Nutrition
University of Pennsylvania New Bolten Center recommended Shannon Pratt Miller for my mare last year when she was diagnosed with pssm2, MFM and VEM …I can get you contact info if interested
Not sure about Shannon Pratt Miller, but if you meant Shannon Pratt Phillips she is excellent

Oops …yes Shannon Pratt Phillips …sorry
Dr. Valberg recommends Dr. Katie Jones. I did a consult with her for $200 and while she knows her stuff (developed many of Purina’s feeds), I don’t think she read the information I provided to her about my horse in advance as she was skimming it while we were talking. She suggested:
2 lbs Strategy
1 lb Purina Enrich Plus
Continue:
MFM Pellets
Nano Q
10 ml Elevate WS Vitamin E oil
I requested a Special Needs Ration Review from KER as well. The advisor (Ashlee Hauss) who prepared the review was EXCELLENT! She gave me so much information about MFM and also calculated my horse’s individual calorie needs and spent a lot of time analyzing everything I had provided her. Her report was 20 pages long!
She suggested:
1.5 lbs triple Crown Balancer
1 lb strategy
Continue:
MFM Pellets
Nano Q
10 ml Elevate WS Vitamin E oil
Other feeds that fall within the MFM guidelines are:
· Purina Strategy GX: 14% CP, 25% NSC, 6% fat
· Seminole Profecta 14: 14% CP, 24% NSC, 7% fat
· Hallway RG14: 14% CP, 28% NSC, 6% fat
· Nutrena SafeChoice Maintenance: 12% CP, 25% NSC, 5% fat
· Buckeye Supreme 14: 14% CP, 29.5% NSC, 6% fat
I hope this is helpful!
For this type of horse, I recommend working with either Dr. Shannon Pratt Phillips or KER.
Here’s what I have him on now (and it seems to be working well):
5 lb TC Sr Gold (too high in fat and too low in NSC per recs, but he’s happy and looks good)
2 cups ProElite Topline
MFM Pellets
Nano Q
Salt
(Per Day)
