NYT article: Can We Learn Anything From Horses?

I enjoyed reading this article about the Equus Experiential Discovery and Learning Campus:

Normally I don’t read the comments in articles, but these were worth a read.

Unfortunately there is a paywall.

I read that article yesterday. Didn’t read the comments, and maybe I should go back and do it.

My main reaction to the article was, “Wow, what a business model!”

Short version: there’s a ranch in Santa Fe that charges $1000 for a two-hour “interaction” with their horses. The interaction seems to include being in a large-ish arena with three or more horses, standing next to them, touching them, watching them move around, and hearing the ranch’s owners interpret the horses’ willingness or unwillingness to interact. Occasionally, one of the ranch owners reads a poem. No riding or tack is involved.

The experience is supposed to allow you to see your true self reflected back to you in the horses’ actions and tell you something deeper about yourself.

But still: it’s $1000 for two hours.

well it does include New Mexico State Sales Tax

I am pretty sure if these were my horses each would have a tip jar setup next to their stall that accepted electronic payments

Sort by “Reader Picks” to see a really excellent one at the top! (“My cat, Grendel . . . also notes, incidentally, that for a mere $2000 an hour . . . he can coach . . .”)

Well one lesson learned here is that “a fool and his money are soon parted.”

Saw an article about someone charging 75$ an hour to cuddle the cows. Brilliant.

I read this article. You can come over and groom my horse, clean my tack, and polish my boots for $500/hour. And I’ll crib from a certain sub shop: Smells are free!

I learn things from horses all the time, and it has cost me many, many thousands. I wonder if one of these places would like to purchase a handsome, friendly bay gelding with a busted knee?

I guess we have crossed to the dark-side as we are often asked to provide a unicorn for a child’s birthday party

There’s a place near me that offers “llama hikes” where you pay $25 to take a walk with a llama.

The comments are definitly the best part of that article. Hey, even if three people did it my hat is off to those folks. I don’t like scammers, but, hey, whatever. The best comment was Grendle the cat, followed by the advice to just take lessons.

I stumbled across a place in the Highlands that charges people £100 to lead a Clydesdale for half an hour. I’m missing a trick here.
