OCD Lesion at Stifle - surgery results?

Looking for anyone who can share their experiences with surgical removal of an OCD lesion in the stifle. What was your decision path? Anything to know about surgery? What was recovery like? Are they back to full work? Thanks in advance.

I’ll be curious to hear about this as well. I’ve vetted 3 over the last couple of years that had gnarly stifle OCD and I decided not to purchase. My vets said it’s the worst joint to have a lesion in, prognosis is guarded.

I had a young horse I was selling who turned out to have OCD in stifle. Did surgery and rehab at clinic. Returned to work (was young horse, 5) schooling second level quickly and was sold. He is now 10 and showing 4th with new owner and schooling tempis and CP and P/p. Looks fantastic.

Dont think it’s affected him, but not in touch with current owner.

I have friend that has a young horse that had an OCD in his sitfle found and removed. I think it’s been two years and so far he’s been sound and fine.

It can really depend on what area of the stifle the lesion is in. I’ve had two with OCD in the non-weight-bearing part of the stifle (where the patella moves) - both had surgery which was successful. One went on to show a bit in 3’ hunters but then had other soundness issues that led to an early retirement. The other never really came back into full work, but had other issues (cervical arthritis and metabolic issues with resulting laminitis) that we discovered later on.

I’ve also vetted a couple with OCD in the weight bearing part of the stifle and was told to run away. Even with a horse that was in full work doing what I intended to do with a trainer who I trusted to be telling the truth, my vet still said it wasn’t a matter of IF this thing would bother him, but WHEN. Horse sold locally and was never seen showing, so I suspect he was right!

I had a friend who had that surgery done and the horse did well. He had to be retired at age 12 due to OTHER (front leg) problems, but the stifle post-surgery was never an issue.
