Ogilvy Baby Pad vs Profile pad

I’m in love with the Ogilvy baby pads but the jump ones don’t love my horse/saddle. They end up completely bunched up under the cantle by the end of a ride. I don’t have this issue with the dressage ones or any other jump pad I’ve ever used.

Does anyone think the Profile pads may do the same thing? Would adding girth loops to the baby pads help? Any other recommendations for a long saddle pad (24" spine at least). I have one of the Dover Rider’s International contoured long ones and do like it, but find the Ogilvys a superior product and I prefer them. Thanks for any advice!

Not sure about solving your issue, as the Olgilvy’s are my favorite (although mine do have the girth loops), but the Smartpak Lite AP pads are my go-to cheaper alternative. I find them quite sturdy without being too bulky, and they have the wither shape as well as girth loops standard.

I have that same issue with my Ogilvy Baby Pad! It’s such a nice pad but I feel like I cant use it for anything serious because it gets so bunched up. It was disappointing for that to become such an issue with such a smart looking pad

@silver_charm Do you know if your Ogilvy pads are the Profile or the baby pad with the loops? And alas, the SP ones are way too short in the spine for what I need. Actually, all of the SP brand ones are sadly.

@BayWatch I know! I love everything about it except actually using it.

My Ogilvys are definitely the baby pad with loops. I hope you can find a solution, they’re hard to beat in terms of quality for sure.

I have the Profile pads and they stay put perfectly with the loops. I can’t use the Ogilvy baby pads as the front is too straight-cut for my forward-flap saddle, but the Profile is perfect. I love these pads.

Edit - I use the girth loops only. Any of the billet loops I cut off as I hate them in general.

For me the baby pads stay in place better. The profile pads bunch, although they have redesigned the girth loops some so they work better. I have no idea why this is. It’s just with my horse and one other who had the same saddle fit. Other horses not a problem. I think the straight shoulder works better for my guy—he’s got a big shoulder. ??

I love the jump profile pad. Stays in place, stands up to much abuse, and washes well. I find that being able to order in sizes provides the fit needed. The larger footprint of daughter’s 17 CWD requires a size large pad to prevent shifting.

That’s interesting, because I have a 17.5" Amerigo with a long and forward flap, and I use the “regular”-sized Profile pad. There is room for both the saddle all the way around, plus my Thinline Trifecta pad (which is bigger than the saddle).

Thank you all for the insights and information! It seems like it just comes down to different things work for different horses and tack setups. I managed to snag a Profile pad pretty cheaply to try and I’ll add girth loops to one of the baby pads to see if that helps.

You could also add loops to the front D Ring. This I believe is an option on Ogilivy pads but could be done at home easily enough. Also sometimes on some pads the girth and billet straps are just in the wrong place for a particular saddle/horse combo.

My Ogilvy baby pads used to slip with my old saddle that didn’t fit my TB well. He has a big shoulder and is super slab sided, so I chalked it up to that and the saddle fit. However, even now that he has a custom saddle I find that they still slip if I do a hard flat or any kind of jump school with my girth too loose. This might be mitigated by adding girth loops? I think that they would still slip through the shoulder though. It might be worth a try to tighten your girth a hole or two if that’s possible. I also like Scribbler’s idea of adding loops to attach to your saddle’s d rings, it would prevent the bunching in the shoulders.

I haven’t used the profile pads on my horse because he is slab sided and my saddle has a short flap, so there is just too much extra fabric hanging out for my tastes. I have ridden other horses in the profile pads though and they didn’t slip, but they were also on rounder horses with well-fitting saddles.

I have never had a problem with any of my Ogilvy baby pads slipping under my saddle and I have 5 of them! If it helps any, my saddle is a 17.5" CWD 2G. I recommend adding some girth loops to the baby pads to see if they will stay put that way. If that works, you can order them with them already on the pad from now on. Have you tried playing around with the placement of the pad underneath your saddle?

I have noticed that the baby pads fit differently than Ogilvy’s profile pads. It is worth giving them a try - they are so nice! The one I have sits a little lower in the front than my baby pads. That may help with the bunching problem.

Surprised to see recommendations to add girth loops to the baby pads because my one complaint (ok, it shifts a little, but I’m notorious for not tightening my girth so that may be operator error) is that it’s too short in the drop, so the bottom of the sweat flap of my saddle hangs over the edge. Even if I had girth loops, I couldn’t use them. And it breaks my heart because I love everything else about the pad. Saddle might have a long flap, but it’s not huge - my other pads fit just fine. :frowning:

I have both, I suspect the girth loop will help the OP a bit. That said, when I was struggling with the baby pad bunching, it turned out that my saddle fit needed a tweak. Wasn’t a huge change, but some custom shims to address some imbalances fixed the problem. I haven’t had an issue since on several difference horses (each of which had fairly regular visits from the saddle fitter).

This is an older thread, but I also have both pads. My profile pad is a bit bigger and is “fluffier” on the under side and does have girth loops. I love the pad but its HUGE on my medium ponies so when I saw them at the Royal, I asked if they had a smaller pad. They said the baby pad comes in pony and I asked for girth loops to be put on it.

It arrived in the mail a few weeks ago and is beautiful but they forgot the girth loops. I used it the other day for the first time with my 16" Antares on my medium pony and it fit him great and didn’t budge. Very happy with both pads! I just purchased a fitted hunter pad as well and though I havent used it yet, it look amazing and feels great.

Apologies for bumping a zombie thread! How strange that I even came across it.
