OHIO: TB Dispersal due to death of owner? Anyone w/more info?

This was on my FB feed this morning, have no idea when it originated or who the original poster was, or what Saturday (tomorrow?! last month?!) whether the horses are nice, neglected, or what…

<<52 thoroughbred horses need homes. Will go to Sugarcreek this Saturday for slaughter. Gentleman died and his son wants nothing to do with them. Most broodmares are broke and some are in foal weanling, yearlings, 2 yrs and 3 yrs old… most are gelded. FREE and papered. Friend of the deceased is trying to find homes 440-463-4288 Barnesville, OH. Please copy and paste this on your status>>

Anyone know anything about this?

Its a very old circular, you can disregard it.

Two years ago in fact. Please do not forward it.

How did it all turn out?

HATE HATE HATE that so much gets shared so quickly on FB and so far, then never dies (though this was the first time I’d seen this particular post).

You certainly can’t trust what you read there.

They were all adopted within a couple of days.

I’m not sure how it turned out, honestly.

This circular has it’s own listing on snopes, and there are a few slightly different versions of it. I have one particular friend who is always forwarding these and won’t be told to check they are true or old before she shares them, she’s posted the 52 TB one any number of times

If I remember properly all the horses were sold off the farm, they had a sort of dispersal sale thing, and I’m not sure the horses were in direct danger of going to sugarcreek. I think a few COTHers went.

Or am I remembering a different group of horses?

I don’t understand why this particular one is so persistent online, when there are hundreds of horses needing help every week. ???

Man, there is a thread going right now about not searching for information to find out whether its true because this old story keeps getting circulated. Do your research.

Mention, free, cheap, or rushed sale, and these things never go away.

This is a myth and has been circulating for a several years. It was posted here in UK, with a English abattoir as the horses’ final destination. I’m tempted to say ignore, but, in the event someone actually has to place several horses at a moment’s notice, I’d suggest doing a bit of research before accepting such a story as true or false.

Will we ever see the end of this post?
Trouble is, when you keep bringing this story up… and people know it’s old news… the next time and a different case, they will figure it’s old news too… crying wolf is never good!

This did occur due to the death of Dr. Daniel Stearns DVM. He was a breeder of Ohiobred racehorses. To my knowledge they all found homes. I used to walk hots for his trainer at Thistledown.

This particular one was not a myth, it WAS very much true. It is also very much outdated.
