OK I’ll say it. #34 in the 5th race yesterday at SA.

Am in LA and it’s pretty much the AM news topic of the day. Is this #2 for this race meet?

Just going by the Info provided by the talking heads, 3 year old gelding named Satchel Page ( that may not be the JC spelling), broken “ ankle”. No idea who trainer was.

Thoughts for a civil discussion.?

Here’s more info (including trainer and the JC spelling of the name):

My thought is that I wish the Breeders Cup was taking place anywhere else.

Synthetic. Stronach is putting it in at Laurel. Yeah, I know Santa Anita had it and it didn’t work, but dead horses doesn’t work either.

The time has probably passed but DelMar should have been subbed. There really was no need to prove anything by not moving it a least month ago.

FWIW, since Keeneland started their current meet, they’ve lost 5.

Santa Anita has lost 2 since the start of the current meet (late September to now)(as best as I can tell).

So, which track is worse? Rolling into SA’s last meet stats into the current meet makes the track look worse than it currently is, no?

At least Keeneland is, IMO, more open about their reporting including an incident report on all racing and training deaths.

And some of the earlier horror show was the track as much as management at Santa Anita appears loath to admit it. This is an example of one perspective but last week I visited Santa Anita, dropped in on the barn where my horse is and hung out. Obviously the subject of this whole nightmare year came up and I was shown pictures of what the track looked like from January to April. What I was shown looked like a fallen water logged souffle. There was a reason Shelbe Ruis stood up to them and it would have been nice if others had too. Of course, she’s from a wealthy family and can afford to do it.

As for now, they have made it very very heavy and soft which has slowed the track down significantly. In theory, that will make catastrophics less likely but there could be a spike in soft tissue injuries. It is a tough balancing act under the best of circumstances.

My personal take is that we have somewhat normalized and what is happening now is in the realm of statistical probability. But it is like a wound we can’t stop picking at and now every breakdown will be magnified.

Finally, of all the people to lose one, I have a really hard time believing that Nick Alexander sent one out that was not OK. This is the guy who had Tough Sunday and his reputation is that he will spend anything to get them right. What a bad day for him because Pee Wee Reese also came up injured (at San Luis Rey) and his survival post surgery is not guaranteed.
