okay probably a dumb question but..

When a saddle is advertised as 19x21 is the first number the length? When I see that think LxW but I just want to make sure.

I’m looking at saddles again … The underside of the saddle that I got looks different than the saddle advertised (it’s supposedto be white fleece…instead it looks bright yellow/orange synthetic stuff that’s going to fall apart in no time). It may have been replaced. The seller didn’t answer the question when asked just said they would give a discount. The leather is pretty dry and looks like it’s been sitting for awhile. Plus with the slight tight fit in the shoulders on the pony I think I will send it back. It looks like a saddle with a little bit of a wider channel would fit better also (if that’s what it’s called lol).

It has the right seat size and it’s full quarter bars but I’m not sure if it’s too long. I need to go measure the pony. Also I’m worried that FQHB might be too wide and will just sit right down on her back but I won’t know until I try.

First # is the drop and second is the length.

Royal King is also made in India, so I don’t know that it’s going to be a vast improvement in quality over the other saddle.

A Royal King is not going to fit anything, not in my experience.

Sorry, but Royal King is bottom of the line equipment.
It would be better to use the $300 to buy a good quality used saddle.
“made of Finest quality leathers”- means processed leather like product.
Underside will be fleece like material-nothing stating it is or should be wool.

Morgansnmind - I don’t know what you’re looking at a saddle for (as in for yourself? for your child? for a gift?) - but I would find a GOOD SADDLE and buy it used. Don’t be swayed by tin - its only similarity to silver is the color - or how pretty the stamping (it’s NOT tooled) on an cheap saddle. And yes, I used that word intentionally. When they’re less expensive than name brand saddles, there’s a reason for that. Other countries don’t tan their leather well (or at all). They don’t use the same quality leather to begin with. The saddles are not built the same as those built in the US. They won’t sit the same, they won’t fit the same. And they darn sure won’t WEAR the same.

Search e-Bay/Craig’s List/every tack shop known to god & man looking for GOOD USED name-brand saddle that will fit your horse and you. But before you do that - go sit in as many as you can (on a horse, preferably your horse) for a short ride, doing what you do. In other words, if you ride equitation, practice your eq; if you game, run a couple barrels; if you rein, do a bit of a pattern. Saddles are built for different uses - a cutter won’t be happy in an eq saddle; an eq rider won’t be happy in a game saddle.

I know the saddles I liked, but that was a couple decades ago and I only liked OLD ones then! A REAL Billy Cook, a good Circle Y - but you’ll see others on here and others you talk to who won’t like either. I did NOT like Price McLaughlin - many of my friends and show colleagues loved them.

Good luck finding one you & your critter are both comfortable with.

thanks yall :0) It’s not me I’m looking for…it’s for the 10.3 hand short back semi wide pony and the kids (ages 2,4,6). I’m trying to find a saddle that won’t cost me a arm and leg because they are going to outgrow it quick but at the same time I want it to fit the pony. Full sized saddles aren’t going to work. I posted one in another post that is more recent. Not sure if that will work either.

I’m about to give up on a decent western saddle and just stick to an english saddle. Speaking of which I just bought a 12" english saddle off the internet and it turned out to be a 17"!? People don’t know how to measure.

The local tack stores just carry the same cheap brands but usually not in a small size…

These litter the Farm & Garden of my local CL, consignment tack stores and sales. Google Corvallis/Albany OR CL. If there’s something you like, I’ll go look at it for you.

Also, a friend of mine has way too many kiddie saddles around and aging grand children. I’m sure she’d sell one to you if it were right.

I know diddly about what will make a kiddie western saddle fit the pony or the kids, but I can be sent on a mission if you know that stuff.

Have you looked at Big Horn saddles? IMO they are somewhat better quality than some of the other synthetics. I love mine because it weighs only about 16 lbs. and fits everything from a classic QH to a stout Paint to a young possible SSH cross. It does NOT fit mutton withers well. The fenders as well as the skirts are cordura, so very flexible, not stiff like some of the leatherlike saddles (e.g., Wintec). I went for it over a used name brand leather one because a) the leather ones weigh so much I cannot pick them up let alone get them on the horse, and b) the ones I saw in local feed shops were in absolutely terrible condition and I don’t know enough about western saddles to know if they had broken trees or other major problems.

Mine is the 502 model and the stirrups go short enough for my legs and a fairly tall child; also they are not Blevins buckles so can actually be adjusted without causing blood blisters, hangnails, or other injuries to your fingers.
