THere was a movie in the late 60s about a horse and a mute boy named Phillip. He names the horse Phillip as well. In the movie the horse gets stuck in quick sand and the boy gets him out and speaks, does anyone know the name of this movie…

… “Run Wild, Run Free.” The boy is Mark Lester, of “Oliver!” fame. It’s actually quite a lovely movie. 
Oh Wow. I can’t believe someone else remembers that movie! I’d watch it every time it came on when I could get it in (hard to get in with the rabbit ears I think I was 5 and cried every time the pony got stuck in the mud but got up when the boy finally spoke. Sigh. Thanks for taking me back down memory lane.

Ok - does someone remember the one called something like Maryland, where the horse falls during a foxhunt and the rider is killed or badly hurt, and the groom is ordered to destroy the horse…black and white from the 30s or 40s with lots of those dramatic movie actresses speaking with a high society accent…

Was that a British movie, and there was always a lot of mist swirling around, and the pony got stuck in a bottomless bog, not quicksand? Or am I thinking of a different movie?
If it’s the same one, it’s a terrible tear-jerker - I remember crying until I threw up when watching it. :rolleyes:
It was chosen by the parents for the Pony Club Christmas party one year, and I wasn’t the only one throwing up; we were all equally stricken. Fine old mess that was - not quite the sweet pony movie they’d hoped for!
Yes, that would be the same movie, and I can understand why you cried. The movie is indeed British and the pony indeed becomes bog-bound, but in Yank terminology, it was quicksand.

I never saw the movie, but I’ve read the book it was based on. The title was originally “The White Colt” but it can also be found under the movie title “Run Wild, Run Free” and it was written by David Rook.
I remember it as Run Wild, Run free and it sure was moving-I loved it!

I also watched this as a child, and cried and cried. Well today I was inspired to do a random search as it is SO foggy here in central California that it reminded me of this wonderful movie. I can’t wait to watch it tonight! Enjoy!!

There are two movies I would like to get my hands on and they apparently aren’t available. One is “Gallant Bess.” Now there IS a movie by that name available, but it’s not the one I’m talking about. The available one is more of a western. The one I want is a WWII movie, where a young man’s loved horse dies. He enlists during the war, and on a Pacfic Island finds a mare, develops a relationship, names it after the horse that died, etc. When they evacuate the island, commanders say horse must be left, but it jumps in the water and swims to the departing LST-type ship, and commanders relent and allow it on…and they all live happily ever after.
The other is called “Kentucky” (circa 1938) and is based on the John Taintor Foote short story, “The Look of Eagles.” It starred Loretta Young. Doesn’t seem to be available on DVD at all.

Wow, I remember Run Wild. Run Free…although I don’t think I would have ever remembered the name. I don’t remember the boy being a mute, but I do remember he was in Oliver. God I was upset over the scene of the pony caught in the bog. I didn’t vomit, but it left such an impression that I remember it some 40 years later.
Both Maryland and Kentucky are on DVD, because my mom got them for Christmas.

I’m not watching the movie to find out, as I got my own horse stuck in the mud once, and I can’t even walk past the spot three years later. (She was able to get herself out eventually, but it was awful while it was in progress, and I thought I had killed her.)
