"Old Style" Stock ties w/o a loop

I was up a Middleburg Tack Exchange yesterday and got a BEAUTIFUL tweed coat for 70 bucks. All I have are white stock ties so I decided to pick up a stock tie that was a pretty tan that matched the tweed. When I got home and pulled it out of the plastic I realized it doesn’t have the hole/loop thing to pull the stock tie through. So, how do I go about tying those kind? HELP!

Thank you!

Ummmmm…

REALLY!!!:eek: Ummm…you wrap it around your neck and tie it exactly the same…ummmm… Sounds like you bought a 4 fold stock tie which is the original and proper design for them btw.

Instead of passing the tail thru the “loop/hole”

you simply “cross” it at the back of your neck, then tie as you normally would. It isn’t difficult at all. I’ve never really understood the struggle. If you can tie your shoes, you should be able to tie a stock and pin it properly.

And in case you, like me, become a bit of a stock tie “addict”, Horse County has some yummy patterned stock ties that go wonderfully with tweed. Just think, all that $ you saved on the hacking jacket can go to getting several different, colored/patterned stock ties, same jacket, different look.

I just noticed your screen name. Do you hunt or just event? I might not ride my dressage test in a patterned tie. Well, I would, but not everyone would feel comfortable doing that.

WG, take pity on the poor girl, if she’s just wearing it for her dressage test, well, she might not know any better yet

Thank you, 2ndygal!

I’ve been eventing much longer than I have been hunting. So I’ve always used white stock with the loop hole for dressage. I’m just getting into the tweed coat and colored/patterned stock ties scene. In the past hunting, even on week days where tweeds are appropriate, I’ve worn my formal attire.

Thanks

They are easy enough to tie without the hole, but if you’re handy with a sewing machine, or know someone who is, you could easily have a slot sewn in, line an extra large button hole.

I don’t even hunt very regularly, and one of my ties is a four fold. I tie it the same as my others. Actually kinda prefer the way it turns out.

My biggest issue with the four folds is keeping it folded nicely. The other ones I can just zip the iron across…not so with the four fold and I SUCK at ironing!!!

Starch is your friend. And… you can’t just fold the tie all the way up and iron it, you first have to iron it flat, then iron each fold. A tiny spray of starch at the fold before you iron it will keep it in place and your stock will always behave while you are tying it.

The only four fold stock I’ve ever had a problem with was a lovely burgundy colored silk one. The damn think is as slippery as a satin sheet, you can’t really starch it and it just sort of droops. As much as I love the color and pattern, I stopped even trying to use it as a stock tie. I’ve sort of used it as a cravat with street clothes, with a blingy diamond pin, but even then it’s just not like a crisp, starched, cotton stock.
