Could someone clarify for me what the foal naming conventions are for Oldenburg (GOV) foals? I had read on the website that fillies are named with the same letter as their dam, and named my 2010 filly accordingly. Now I am looking at some other Oldenburg breeders’ websites and all of their fillies seemed to be named with the same letter as their sire. Did I miss something?
It is that fillies CAN be named after their dam or after their sire.
I believe that foalsare to be named after the sire. Fillies specifically bred to be broodmares are to be named following the dam.
from the rulebook:
Naming Conventions
When naming your Oldenburg foal you must choose a name that follows the rules of the Oldenburg Horse Breeding
Society - German Oldenburg Verband. Those rules state that if the foal is a fi lly that is intended for breeding the name
must start with the fi rst letter of the Dam’s name. If the fi lly is not intended for breeding then the name can start either
with the fi rst letter of the Dam’s name or with the fi rst letter of the Sire’s name, but cannot start with any other letter.
If the foal is a colt the name must start with the fi rst letter of the Sire’s name.
Sounds like either way I am safe having named my filly after her dam. Seems sort of strange to me to have to decide whether a filly is intended for breeding or not, right when it is born.
