Older cocker spaniel--Crusty, dry nose.

My parents cocker spaniel has an extremely crusty dry nose. She is 10 and had it off and on most of her life. Right now it is bad. I have been putting Vaseline on it to keep it from cracking but she usually either licks it off and runs to her bed and rubs it off. She is healthy, albeit fat. My Dad has dementia and mindlessly feeding her is a part of his dementia . I am working on that by walking her several days a week. Is this an expression of something brewing or are there any magic cures?

TIA

Maybe a contact dermatitis? Could be something as simple as grass or laundry soap, something she rubs her nose in?
