I see that Jane Forbes Clark co-owns one of Great Britain’s Olympic show jumpers. I thought that the horse’s owners had to be the same nationality as the team? Didn’t that used to be a thing? Or is it because the rider is the other owner and is British so it’s okay?
It’s ok because Ben Maher owns a portion of Tic Tac. Same with Tiffany Foster and Eric Lamaze, I believe his Torrey Pines stable owns a portion of their Olympic mounts as well.
It is my understanding that “at least one of the owners” (not “all the owners”) must have the same nationality as the team.
A quick google search gave me this:
http://www.fei.org/system/files/FEI_Olympic_Update_01_Newsletter_12Oct2011.pdf
"2. The nationality of a Horse is that of its Owner or of the Lessee, where a lease is current, or of the country in which the company owning or leasing it is registered. A company may, however, own a Horse in partnership with an individual.
-
When one or more Horses belong to a partnership of Owners of different nationalities, the Owners must declare to the FEI, before making the first entry, the nationality under which the Horse or Horses will compete and that nationality must be entered in the FEI and/or national passport. The Horses must retain that nationality until the partnership is dissolved or the Horses are sold. Any consequent change of nationality must be reported to the FEI.
-
Horses entered for the Olympic Games must be the property of Owners of the same nationality as the Athlete by 31st December of the year preceding the Games (see Olympic Regulations)."
That still reads to me that for the Olympics the horse has to be owned by persons of the same nationality, but obviously I’m reading it wrong or the rule has changed (this is from London 2012).
Ah, it’s much clearer on the 2016 FEI Olympic Regulations:
2.2. Ownership
2.2.1. Horses entered for the Equestrian Events at the Olympic Games must have beenregistered with FEI as property of owners of the same nationality as the Athlete, by 15January 2016.
2.2.2. Horses, with multinational ownership, must be registered with FEI by 15 January 2016(as per above paragraph), under the name of the nation for which the Horse will competeduring the Olympic Games.
2.2.3. National Federations (NFs) are responsible to ensure that Horses which do not meetownership requirements as laid down by FEI, are not entered for the Equestrian Eventsat the Olympic Games.
If you look at Tic Tac’s FEI horse detail, you will see that since 12/15/2015, he has been owned by Jane Forbes Clarke & Ben Maher with a nationality of Great Britain.

Ya Ben and Jane definitely know the rules. The only time I’ve seen it messed up was when the horse was owned by a corporation.
