I hope you will keep us updated! I’m on the edge of my seat.
Jingling for this poor girl and for you to have a safe and easy trip to get her.
You have such a good heart! Safe journey, and fingers crossed she’ll be ok! I like hearing all the details and your plan.
I wish she was closer to me…I would go get her for you. I looked it up and it’s about an hour from me as well
Looking forward to the update! Does she come with a name? Or will you be choosing one for her?
She’s home. The owner said virtually nothing to me; I think he’s just happy to be rid of her. She has a name–Janine, I believe he said–but I’m calling LAME (at least, for a snake name) and will be renaming her eventually.
The drive actually wasn’t bad at all. The drive was straight east on one freeway, and we met at a Starbucks just off the freeway, so it made for an easy commute. Once I got her home, I put her in temporary housing and started dumping out her tank (which is a NICE set up–I’m guessing maybe they bought a big set up at PetSmart/Petco years ago). I took all the tank decor and soaked them in a water-bleach solution, dumped out all that abominable sand, rinsed out the tank, then let it sit partially filled with a bleach-water solution. I weighed her and took photos, wiped down the rather grossly dusty screen lid, thhen dumped and rinsed out everything. Her tank now has a lovelyl, clean water dish filled with fresh clean water, a nice semi-deep layer of fine aspen chips–perfect for burrowing, which corn snakes loooooove, impossible in the previous reptile sand bedding–and her hide, climbing branches, and decor are drying in the hot sun as I type.
And great news! She pooped and peed on the way home, so that’s a very good sign there isn’t an impaction. It also suggests that she’s in such crappy condition due to pure neglect.
And indeed, she is horrifyingly underweight. At her approximate age and length, she should be well over 300g; heck, my lavender female of about the same age is over 500g (and isn’t overweight). This poor girl is an appalling 82g…not even breaking the 100g mark. Hopefully we’ll be able to turn her around soon.
OF COURSE pics :
How she looked in her tank when I first picked her up
Scrawny necky, very prominent spine, head appears oversized–clear signs of her emaciated state.
Her eyes and mouth are clear, though
Weighing in–that container she’s in is 357g.
More pics to come later on as I complete her set up.
So, since she has already pooped and peed for you, will you feed her sooner than you originally planned? (Question from someone who knows nothing about snakes and is enjoying learning from this thread.)
OMG! Horrifyingly underweight is an understatement!
So glad you and she made the trip ok, and that she peed and pooped! I’m with trubandloki - are you going to feed her right away?
I still will wait several days before feeding her because of the stress she’s been under in the travels and then having her home completely redone. A stressed snake is more prone to regurgitation, and that’s a big mess that can create a host of other problems. Snake stomach acid is extremely concentrated (what with being able to dissolve the enamel on teeth, nonetheless bone, and all), so when they regurge, those acids come up with the meal and do a lot of damage to the esophagus and mouth. It’s not awful, but it takes some finesse to re-feed after a regurge. (Only time I’ve ever experienced it was when Cleo was fed apparently too large a meal when she was heavy with eggs.) I’d rather wait and ensure she’s settled than risk it.
I’m about to go get the surely dried, if not baked, decor out of the sun and finishing setting up her new home. More pics will then be coming, of course.
82g?!!! OMG!!
I can’t WAIT to hear about the wonderful progress she’s going to make with you, Lauruffian
Correction: She’s about 189g, which makes more sense. She’s definitely skinny and emaciated, but not the near-death-how-is-she-still-alive 82g. I think the first container I put her in was too large and wobbly for the scale, and where she situated herself greatly affected the reading. This container I used to use for my babies before finding something else, and it has proved pretty reliable and accurate.
So glad you got her! Lots of jingles for her . Poor thing she can only go up from now.
P.
See? It was meant to be! She’s already put on more than 100 g since you’ve gotten her!
Have you been able to tell if she has been properly handled/socialized? Or is she just too thin or stressed to be showing her true personality?
Lauruffian–you are so cool! I enjoy these threads a lot and I’m not even a snake person (clueless about them). Keep up the good work and thank you for helping these critters!
Me too! Love seeing these snakes brought back to good health. My son wants a reptile. I don’t think I could handle anything that eats live bugs, but have been thinking of getting him a snake. He would be great with it, I just don’t know how I will react. Sometimes I freak out at small snakes out side, but was fine with a huge Boa at his birthday party - lol!
Lauruffian, you are awesome. I’m following your thread with interest and am so thankful this little girl found her way to you!
I am sooooo NOT a snake person. In fact, I would probably be considered a snake hater. Having said that, I’ve really enjoyed this tread. Kudos to you, Lauruffian, for being a kind and compassionate snake rescuer.
I looked at the website that sells venomous snakes online. Aaaaack! I couldn’t help but notice that many of the ads offered national shipping. So… ummm… how does that work? Do they just put a King Cobra in a cardboard box and drop it off at a local UPS office?
Good for you! That second weighing photo makes me think she’s saying, “uh oh, i’m in a mixing bowl; this can’t be good…”
You will have her/him up to weight in no time. Such a pretty color.
I’m sure you already know this but you can zero out your scale after you put the bowl on it to make it easier for snake weighing.
I have a BP that just reached over 1600 g…I’m ecstatic!
I’m jonesing for a snake update.
