That would be me…I’m a glutton for punishment clearly. Also, I can’t stand that kind of complete ignorance. I mean, if you LOVE the horse so much, why dont you bother to actually LEARN about them?? Thanks for trying to inject some sense into their hysteria - I tried that when CC was first shipped to Dubai and they freaked out about him being sent in a tin can and thus being scared and alone in the dark and cold of a regular cargo hold in some foreign plane and maybe dying and no one being there with him and how horrible racing was in England etc etc. …

I posted videos of international horse transport and how it worked and they were furious - CC could not be treated like any multi-million dollar race horse or top level jumper or dressage horse - he needed a plane all to himself!

I also explained some racing things that they were ignorant about - and got blocked and banned. I have been amazed that you have been able to carry on the way I used to - without getting blocked in a fit of pique! Well done!

It may be that he isn’t filling his book? His fee is $40K which I think is reasonable to possibly a stretch given his pedigree.

I am not “in the know,” but I feel it can be said with 100% confidence that he will see over 100 mares in the states this year. That’s basically the benchmark for any new sire these days, and farms work their tails off to make that number for the first years.

There’s a lot of “smoke and mirrors” that goes into stud fees. But I personally believe that $40K price point is exactly where he belongs as a freshman sire. He’s outrun his pedigree at this point, making it a somewhat moot point.

I did see one comment over and over and was wondering if there has been a study done if dual hemisphere stallions have an earlier fatality rate? I wouldn’t think so but that sure seems to be a popular thought…

Casual perception- it certainly seems plausible.

My biggest issue is that we push our boys SO hard anymore for the sake of numbers for the market. Yes, I know reproductive advances equate to higher success rates on fewer covers. Yes, I know a stallion can cover many more mares today without doing any more “work” than one did 30 or 40 years ago. But it seems like we just continue to push for more, and more, and more… a massive North American book isn’t enough anymore; now stallions have to be dual hemisphere phenoms, too.

Kinda why I asked as I wasn’t aware of any real concerns about flying other than the flight crashing or something.

Also, I believe that they got confused between the way horses are shipped across country versus overseas. There were all sorts of photos of American Pharoah in an open stall with his buddy next to him versus those “metal boxes” (stalls) that the horses going overseas are shipped in. Wasn’t there also a reference somewhere in that Dubai-England-USA scenario where he was shipped “freight?”

I have to commend Taylor Made’s PR department for not blowing their stack publically (what they do behind closed doors is their own business), and instead offer very rational and involved descriptions of just what they are doing, why they are doing it, and all of the precautions they are taking with Chrome.

Actually, it wasn’t just International Velvet.

In 1964, Michael Plumb’s horse Markham was euthanized in flight on the trip to the Tokyo Olympics after the horse panicked. Markham was euthanized to keep him from destroying his stall and possible the aircraft.

Having said that, equine air travel has change significantly in the last 50+ years

Maybe they still fly “freight” and not first class with a glass of champaign but still much safer and roomier accommodations.

I suspect the option for euthanasia is still on the table as a ‘just in case’ but wonder if it will ever be needed again.

Unfortunately, the media itself does help with perceptions. Yes, I believe that horses have been slaughtered in back alleys (roughly) for their meat. All it takes is one or two slaughtered and that is what happens to all horses

I agree with Laurierace, it IS worse than what happened to Ferdinand, but IIRC those were stolen horses or horses sold at auction that were slaughtered in illegal butcher lots or killed and the larger cuts taken while the horse’s body was left in the field. I’m not sure where they’re getting the idea it’s SOP for any horse down there.

It did happen to a high value show jumper but it was believed to have been an inside job by someone who had knowledge of that facility. It’s certainly not like the wild west with horses being stolen and slaughtered all over.

It seems like the BCH people have found a new home on another Chrome facebook page that I follow. I tried to interject some reason on a few posts about how horses fly all over everyday with very few issues. They finally deleted my comments when I said that racing is a business first and foremost. :lol:

I’m not entirely sure why they let me stay…lol. I mean, I throw them a crumb once in a while when I talk about Chrome, because I do genuinely like the horse. He’s not an all time great, despite their insistence, but he was fun to watch on the track. Unfortunately, the absolute insanity of some of those folks made me start rooting against him. Honestly, one of the best things about Arrogate winning in Dubai is never having to hear how being the leading NA money winner equals greatest horse ever…lol. I guess I just can’t accept that some people are so clueless that even when presented with actual facts, they still talk nonsense. I posted Coolmore’s shuttling video and got zero response. I get a lot of feedback about how GREEDY it is but they care about the HORSE. Yeah… people in racing don’t even LIKE horses. They’re just in it to get rich…lol. It reminds me of that old saying “The easiest way to become a millionaire with horses is to start as a billionaire”. They just do NOT understand the expenses involved and the fact that one good horse is probably paying the bills for a whole barn of horses who aren’t earning at that level plus broodmares, foals, yearlings, pensioned horses, lay-ups. It’s an industry. But, I have to keep myself in their good graces… I have an evil streak…If he’s a wash at stud I sort of want him to be sold to South Korea just to see what they do and I don’t want to miss THAT.

Thanks!! I have no idea why they tolerate me but I don’t think it matters…99% of them don’t WANT to know the facts. LOL. I tried the air travel discussion… I was told that flying isn’t natural for horses so they shouldn’t do it…smh. But, hey, if my time in crazy Chromie land led me to a cool site of real horse folks, then I’m happy.

When I told my hubs Chrome was going to shuttle, he said maybe TM didn’t realize what they were in for when they bought into Chrome and made this deal just so they wouldn’t be overrun with Chromies in the off season! :lol:

That actually happened not far from where I live…maybe 20 minutes. I drive past the farm pretty regularly. Someone killed the horse on the farm and butchered it. I don’t remember all the details…it was about a year ago I think, in Palmetto or Ellenton, Florida. The horse had been recently imported from Europe I believe and I think he was a show jumper. It was a fairly big story at the time locally and iirc, they thought it was at least in part an inside job. I’m guessing one of the nuts read the story and took it to mean that’s what happens to horses all over Florida???
