I do remember that story as well, horrific. But it shouldn’t be used as an example of the horse industry in Florida, this was certainly a rare instance, not something that is done as a norm (to my knowledge).
There were slaughters of stolen or auctioned animals, but I think the people doing this were finally caught, but it was happening. I remember the one on the horse farm, with the imported horse, and wondered if anyone had been caught. I think there was another attempt right after that to steal animals, but that one I’m not sure about.
However, this has nothing to do with an expensive, well-protected animal like CC.
Those people are going to go berserk (well, more so) when the first CC babies start arriving next year…all foals will be “their” babies, and they’re going to drive the mare owners mad with demands for pictures and updates.
If the mare owners do not have a big online presence then it shouldn’t be a problem. Most of these folks don’t seem to have the little grey cells required to research and stalk the private, or smaller non commercial breeders.
The big farms have online people who are aware of the rabid fans and have very good security, so physical stalking is unlikely to be successful. I’m sure Taylor Made will post some photos of the ones that belong to them and perhaps others that foal out at T.M. (with the mare owner’s permission).
I think the number of photos online will depend as well on what quality of foal C.C.sires.
Hopefully the “fans” can make due with the photos that are sure to be online. Perhaps decorate a room with poster sized photo enlargements or a collage…
Lets hope some of them have money to spend on his yearlings. I hope he exceeds expectations. Which won’t be hard considering all the nye-sayers about his pedigree. If I had a mare worthy I would breed to him in a heart beat.
“I think the number of photos online will depend as well on what quality of foal C.C.sires”
Big time.
The industry as a whole IMO and experience was very slow embracing the Internet let alone social media. But it has a pretty good handle on it now. Still lacking in many respects. Taylor Made are no dummies. IMO they have played this “hand” better than Winstar who’s owner’s money comes from the “Internet”.
I have been asked why we don’t put our foaling mares on “Mare Stare”. I don’t have the time nor inclination to explain why not. My response has generally been; “Too complicated”.
If one reads the industry trades you will rarely see more than the “odd”, couple of pictures of a high profile stallion’s foals. Even thought they have covered 100 to 200 hundred mares.
