On to the Belmont 2018 - who's bandwagon are you on? post KD and Preakness

The video hasn’t disappeared. I’m so hoping that it is something very minor.

The only thing I can say in defense (and boy, this is hard) is that maybe he comes out of every race this sore and bounces back quickly, which is maybe why Baffert didn’t show any concern.

He’s is a big horse and ran a huge race, even if it looked “easy.”

But wow… horse racing does not need this kind of idiocy. The days of keeping the backside shrouded in mystery are over; if you’re going to parade a lame horse around in front of the press, be transparent about it. Otherwise PETA is going to have a field day.

I was just reading Facebook comments (I know, I know) on a report on the race from some site. Kentucky Derby dot com, maybe? There was one woman shrieking that Magnum Moon, repeatedly referred to as “she,” had lost the race due to collusion between all other jockeys, Churchill Downs, and apparently even the weather. The jockeys had orders given to them “in their earbuds” once the race started to set it up. Magnum Moon obviously should have won, because she (sic) was undefeated two weeks ago. Even on FB, people were trying to point out the multitude of errors in her statements, but when one said that Justify was also undefeated, she went on another tirade that no, Justify wasn’t. Magnum Moon had 150 points, and Justify was well down the list, so Magnum Moon was the undefeated one. It’s all a conspiracy. She was very worked up, in places IN CAPS, about all this and was countering all attempts at reason. Even the correction of MM’s gender didn’t go unchallenged.

Good grief. It’s frightening to think that people with that little rationality are out there, maybe even driving a car on the same road as you. Yikes.

The Bloodhorse writeup today makes no mention of the obvious lameness either. Just a comment by Baffert that Justify came out of the race in “phenomenal shape”.

Sorry yes left hind. In the very short clip I saw he looked lame on front but further video clearly shows left hind is non weight bearing.

I cannot believe they brought him out but maybe they suspected if they didn’t people would wonder. They should’ve brought him out into a larger area and avoided tight circles. It’s definatrly ugly. Then again maybe he just got the back of his leg stepped on/scraped badly and he’s awfully sore. But they should’ve been up front about it not ignored it. Very sad

For what it is worth…

Oh please. That only works if he gets cellulitis every time as well. Complete BS.

My old gelding used to do that every single time his legs got wet and weren’t toweled dry. So, it’s not completely unheard of. Now, I’d expect a Derby winning racehorse to be made of sterner stuff than my little wuss, though!

Its not that I call BS on him getting scratches… (although that speaks to other things) but that a “simple case of scratches” would produce that kind of lameness. I would say that he had a case of cellulitis to be that sore. Which is not simple scratches. Its the “toss them an explanation they can google and then leave me alone” type answer.

I don’t think it’s scratches, either.

Just chiming in that some very sensitive horses can become super lame overnight with cellulitis from simply getting wet.

Scratches can turn in to cellulitis very easily.

Well, that didn’t really work . Maybe someone more computer savvy than I can find it and post it. It’s in an online Washington Post article from today…clip is about 3 quarters through article
edited…maybe the link did work, I don’t know. The one at the beginning of my post seems to work, anyway …

Now I’m an Idiot when it comes to picking which leg a horse is lame on but this - this is so flaming obvious. Horse is totally walking on his left hind TOE and very sore. Plus as others have posted, every time he stops he camps that foot up. I am sure they are going over him “with a fine tooth comb,” but that doesn’t look very comfortable. I’m saying “ow” just watching.

Also, they can really really dispense withal that irrelevant crap. I mean, I like Tara and Johnny allright but enough already. I like the other races on the card but I could lose the rest. I did watch the clip about the San Luis fires and that was very sad. The rest of it - yawn.

That does not explain why he was dead lame on a circle and walked much sounder into the barn.

Usually there will be blood if a horse grabbed his lower leg or foot, but I won’t rule that out.

Justify walks the shed row, on Twin Spires Twitter Page:

https://mobile.twitter.com/TwinSpires?ref_src=twsrc^tfw&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Fnews%2Fearly-lead%2Fwp%2F2018%2F05%2F06%2Fthe-photo-finish-tells-how-good-justify-was-in-the-kentucky-derby%2F

Thanks keysfins. He looks good on that walk, but I couldn’t watch the Baffert video for more than three seconds.

I saw justify walking the shedrow on the KY derby page but the video was originally posted May 4th so I was prior to the race. Not sure if the twinspire video is the same one or pre-race video I saw. Sorry I cant open the link above

I will be interested to see how quickly Justify returns to the track even for a jog. Considering these horses get bathed everyday, I would imagine treating scratches would be extremely difficult; especially when the next race is in only 2 weeks and they cant use anything that would test positive in that short timeframe.

To me, it looked like a bruised hoof. Ran hard on a sealed, muddy track; those feet took a beating during that race.

Bob’s team, I am sure, has all the best in their barn to treat their horses. But they should’ve never walked him out of that barn on sunday morning without first making a statement on his scratches. It’s bad PR all around for the industry. We live in a world where social media takes things and runs with it and the racing industry is already under constant scrutiny. I am more surprised not one of the press-people standing there even noticed. Goes to show that not a single one of them knows horses. I knew something was off the minute I saw the 3 second video on my phone and that video did not show him tip toeing.

Hope he heals up quickly.
