I think you may be right.
Holy cow. What a horse race! Beautiful effort by Justify, and Good Magic was fantastic as well. Whoever that dark horse was who closed like a bullet was FLYING at the end and will certainly be one to watch in the Belmont.
Both Tenfold & Bravozo came running fast & hard at the end.
It will be interesting to see how Justify comes out of the race & if he can stick the distance in the Belmont.
Tenfold? Yes that horse was moving!
While I certainly wish for a Triple Crown winner not sure Justify can keep up that pace with the distance at Belmont. What a race, had me on my feet! Tenfold and Bravozo made quite a run there at the end! Good Magic was my pick for the Derby and he certainly gave Justify a run for the money too!
The #8 Horse came up on the outside and stretched, who took 2nd?
Bravazo.
The Belmont is going to be VERY interesting, for sure. I don’t know whether Justify can get the distance, but today’s race certainly hints at a spectacular finish in a few weeks at Big Sandy.
I think Bravazo second and Tenfold ( the hard charging horse at the end) in third.
Bravazo was second (?)
Tenfold was 6, Bravazo was 8
Tenfold was lying pretty close the last furlong. That was Bravazo flying up for 2nd and might well have caught him given another 1/16th. And Justify actually looked a little tired unlike after the Derby. Might not have been that fast a time but he gutted it out. MS says he was distracted and a little jumpy, thought he might be when MS went to the stick mid stretch and got a huge reaction as the horse got back to business.
Wouldnt write him off just yet though, closing is one thing, passing is another… But he’ll have to work for it, todays effort wont scare anybody off.
Quip was eased at the top of the stretch…which we could not see in the fog, they just mentioned it. Imagine he’s hurt, he did bobble pretty ugly breaking.
Finally, they gave us the official order of finish:
1 - Justify
2 - Bravazo
3 - Tenfold
That was really fun to watch. Can’t wait for Belmont!
I hope Quip came home ok, 46 lengths back…??
Good race… Good Magic laid it down and Justify answered until down the stretch. Early fractions were decent but not hot as were some of the earlier races on the card.
Bravazo and Tenfold were smoking at the end.
I think a well rested Justify on a good surface is better than any horse in the field today (IMO only ).
He needs the 3 weeks (could probably use more but unless he has a health-related issue he’ll be in the gate on Belmont day). It would be nice if at least one of the TC races didn’t need an ark to compete effectively
I also am not completely sold on Justify getting 1.5mi . We’ll see in 3 weeks.
Oh, and Ax Man… excellent race. I thought the same thing… Mike S has a race over the surface so he knows what to expect and how it rides but won’t know until Justify gets out of the gate what horse MS has under him.
Exciting race. Ive been a fan of Lone Sailor since I saw him at Saratoga last year so I am glad he ran well.
I would be surprised if Justify makes the Belmont. He’s so gutsy, but has run so hard in a such a short period of time and I’m not convinced of his soundness or his ability to get the distance.
IKR - he ran big if a bit green down the stretch. I didn’t like how he ducked in and switched back to his inside lead. Hopefully it was the crowd or noise or something and not anything physical. Curlin already has a Belmont winner in Palace Malice. And Creator won for Tapit.
Lukas had Bravazo just about perfect for this race. He ran kinda rank in the beginning but was a bit closer to the pace than usual. To see horses close like he and Tenfold did on a track with a huge huge speed bias is notable.
He was “eased”. That means the jockey slowed him deliberately, usually done when the horse is so badly beaten there’s no point asking them to continue trying to catch up. They contine to gallop and cross the wire. If they use the term “pulled up” it means they stopped the horse and they do not cross under the wire and finish, usually vanned off.
Quip about fell on his face breaking out of the gate and never got going so was eased. Nobody could see where in that fog or they would have included that in the race call. He may have banged himself up on the gate or clipped heels with another, couldn’t tell off the only camera shot they had, usually have 2 or 3 views but the fog obliterated all but that one sort of head on shot.
FYI - Derby 10 furlongs, Preakness 9.5 f, and Belmont 12 f. Two weeks between Ky Derby and Preakness, and three weeks between Preakness and Belmont. There will be some fresh horses in the Belmont to put a spanner in the works.
Damn it! I knew I was forgetting something today!
