We are in the process of convincing ourselves to buy a new truck. We’ve narrowed it down to the Dodge Diesel. Short, 6’4" beds are much easier to find over the 8’ box. We pull a Merhow 2+1 gooseneck and are wondering if buying a short box is going to be problematic for pulling a gooseneck?
It can be. If you often need to maneuver in tight spaces, short beds limited range of motion without smashing out the back window will be a problem.
Does your merhow have a straight or tapered nose? A tapered nose will buy you just a titch more turning space.
YES, especially if your gooseneck is boxy. It will limit your turning radius and increase your chances of busting out your back window. That said, MANY people tow with a short bed.
No, I don’t think so. A 6’+ bed is not “short”, it is “standard”. My 2500 pulls my gooseneck just fine. When I think of ‘short box’, I’m thinking those <6’ on half-tons with large cabs.
Even a “standard” might have issues, that’s why I asked the shape of the trailer schnoz.
We’re pulling a GN with a 6’6" bed SuperCrew. Our trailer is recent enough (2015) that it was designed for the shorter beds, with a tapered nose, and we haven’t had any problems or close calls.
I’ve had no problems with my tapered nose trailer and 6.5’ bed.
