Hi everyone! I’m doing some R&D on feed brands and wanted to ask COTHers; what are your favourites and why? Good experiences, bad experiences? Likes, dislikes on suppliers? Let me know what you think,
Thanks!
I struggle with this!
Masterfeeds is prevalent in our area but I worry that it is too hig in starch, not enough protein and doesn’t have mineral levels I would like.
Purina is another choice but again, formulas change and they are low in Vitamin E. I’m not sure the formulas are inline with what I’m hoping for.
Based on COTH recommendations I am currently feeding Tribute. Expensive but blooming already -have only tried it for two months and pleased to date.
I have also heard good things about Brooks feeds but don’t think we have any dealers in the area.
In a perfect world I would love to find a soy free, low NSC, high quality feed that has plenty of copper, high omega, vitamin E and lysine, with limited high quality ingredients so my allergy prone beast doesn’t react.
Brooks feeds for my guys. With KER’s EquiJewel.
They have a variety of low NSC feeds suitable for my horse with EPSM, Cushings and feed volume limitations. Their recommended feed amounts were about half of most feeds at the time I was looking. They had stricter ingredient content, and quality control. Both very important for my other horse who has sensitivities to some common feed ingredients.
Of the three dealers I have dealt with one was great, one was fine and one not good (though that one appeared to only be a dealer to get a discount on feed for their barn - and they have been out of business for a while).
My horses do very well on the Brooks feeds I use.
