I’m going through the process of researching just about every wool-flocked available saddle in order to get one that will actually fit my horse. I just got an email from Amerigo, and before I take the next steps, I’d love to hear some opinions on how they seem to go. Do your horses like them? Are the reps and fitters knowledgeable?
Thanks in advance
Amerigos are great quality saddles. I haven’t had good luck getting them to fit my horses, but I think they tend towards a specific back type that mine are not (mine are huge shouldered, high withered, round barrel shapes).
Vet your fitters. Remember that representatives are not synonymous with certified saddle fitters, and many brand reps only take a few week course. They will use misleading language like “certified representative” - that doesn’t mean they are a qualified saddle fitter. I wouldn’t even bother enlisting a rep.
I would ask around and find clients of these fitters – the best testament is a client that has used that fitter and the saddle they recommended for years. Walk away if you see they have a revolving cast of clients, or need new saddles every year or so.
Amerigo has the best rep! They have two kinds of tree types for different back. Robin, the rep, is from the Virginia area but often around the country at shows! She has worked there for YEARS, which says a lot considering how fast some other companies go through their reps!!
I have had mine (Vega model) since 2005 or so. I love it! I have had it fit to three different horses.
I have a few Amerigos but they are all dressage saddles. I have a few different models and I love them all. Great saddles and designed to fit different tree shapes and sizes.
These guys do fittings for Amerigo and can do them virtually. Highly recommend them.
I LOVE my Amerigo DJ (not a monoflap though), and so does my horse (big shoulders, high wither TB but not a barrel )
They do actually have several different trees so there are choices to fit many types of backs. I got mine used and have it fitted and adjusted by an independent fitter, who is also Amerigo’s warranty guy so he is very familiar with them.
It’s the first saddle I’ve had that I’ve said you’ll have to pry from my dead hands. The first time I sat in it, it just felt like it was made for me.
I am thrilled with my Amerigo
