Opinions on Best Winter Riding Boots

i live in eastern massachusetts where last year i had the pleasure of escaping the crazy winter and taking my dressage mare to wellington, florida to train. unfortunately we will be staying behind to train in the cold this year :frowning: does anyone have experience/advice on the best/warmest winter riding boots to help me get through a new england winter?

thanks in advance!

Ariat Bromonts. Hands down. These keep me toasty during Canadian winters. I can only wear thin socks in them because otherwise my feet sweat.

I can’t afford the fancy Mountain Horse winter riding boots so I use my brother’s old winter boots. With the insulation and a few Carharrt socks my feet stay pretty warm. The only downside is that they are a little wide so I have different stirrups for winter- wouldn’t want to get a foot stuck in the stirrup and be dragged. But seriously, most generic boots work just as well as the expensive equestrian ones from Dover.

I second this. I was a little nervous buying them because I had heard horror stories of Ariat going downhill in terms of quality, but they are going on their 4th winter (and winter here is like November - March/April! LOL) and they still look almost new. No break in, very comfy, and warm.

I’m a wimp when the temp dips below 20, and here in Canada it gets worse than that. What works best for me is my Sorels, with heavy duty Arctic wool socks.

Mountain Horse Stella Polaris. Love mine!!

Mountain Horse Stella Polaris or, even better for me personally (I prefer the zip up the side to the back zip) the Mountain Horse Active Winter Rider Tall. I do EVERYTHING in those boots - ride, chores, shovel snow, ATV ride. They are amazing.

I have the Ariat Brossards and are really pleased with them - my feet get cold in the summer so the fact that these keep them comfy when it’s actually cold out is impressive!

Agree but I bought up a size and wear heavier socks. I fox hunt in these.

Does anyone have experience with both the Mountain Horse Active Winter Rider Tall and the Ariat Bromont Winter Boot? Those are the two I have been debating between myself.

Mountain Horse Rimfrost paddock boots are wonderfully warm. Coupled with Irideon Windpro breeches. And last winter I bought a Mountain Horse jacket (forget the model name) that was incredibly warm, right down to the single digits and below. I’m in Maine, and we had some tough weather last winter, but I was warm and comfortable the whole time.

As I said above, SaddleUp, you will have to pry my MH Active Tall boots from my cold, dead feet. I do chores, shovel snow, ride, go on the ATV… they are awesome. And I mind the cold. I live in NEPA and usually wear them with normal socks.

Do these winter boots breathable? My last pair of Ariat (can’t remember the model - long ago) while was warm, was also stuffy, and I always had sweaty feet.

Thank you! I hate the cold and always have frozen feet in the winter. I may have to try these out.

I change my stirrups to extra wide trail stirrups when wearing winter boots.
It makes SUCH a difference!

Noble Outfitters - I have the summer version, and with one pair of SmartWool socks, my feet were toasty during subzero temps last winter. This is especially helpful, because I don’t have particularly good circulation in my feet, so they tend to be hard to keep warm. I can do all my chores in them, as well as ride, and for those who want them, they have spur rests, too.

I’m another Mountain Horse gal. I have the Stella Polaris model and they are BEAUTIFUL and SOOO toasty. I wear thin Smartwool socks and my winter life is great. I believe my boots will be going on their 4th season now and I can still wash them off and walk around in public with them (get TONS of compliments).

I’ve had good luck with my Middleburg Fleece-Lined Winter Boots from Dover. This will be my 4th winter with them and they are still quite warm. Last year I started feeling cold come up through the bottom of the boots because the insoles had compressed, but I put in new insoles and they are as warm as ever. I think they make both a regular calf and a wide calf now, so more sizing options.

do you ride in the Sorels? i have an old pair that i use for around the barn but am looking for ideas for riding in the freezing cold :frowning:
