Opinions on Cabalito?

Hi everyone- I an casually considering buying a foal in-utero. The mare in question had a foal by Cunningham in May of 2014 that I was interested in, however my situation was not correct at the time to buy. The mare is now bred back to Cabalito, the Hanoverian stallion and the foal will be registered Oldenburg.

Mare is the retired AO hunter belonging to a friend of mine, and someone who I trust immensely for her opinion on horses. She is not the breeder.

Does anyone have any opinions they’d like to share regarding Cabalito? I am not familiar with him or his offspring at all. I have formulated my own opinions but would like to hear some others. Likes? Dislikes? The foal would hopefully be developed as an AO hunter/derby horse in an wonderful program with an extremely talented professional.

Just want to hear some thoughts of others before I pursue this any further!

I think he is a lovely boy. I first saw him over 10 yrs ago as I’m local to him. His foals seem to do really well on the line and go one to have very successful performance careers. He also did Level 8 jumpers at one point.

I have heard that some of his competing offspring have sold for over 200K on the coasts.

If the mare and Cab were a good fit conformationally, I would expect a very nice foal!

The foals I’ve seen both in pics and in person, tend to be very typey, blingy, with good brains. They seem to mature 16.1+.

I should probably mentioned that I bred a Cy daughter to him this year (she didn’t take, darn her) and Ann has a Cybaby coming out of an Edelweiss/Cabalito mare.

Ann is a super stallion owner and great person. And I’m sure would be happy to answer your questions about him.

We have had a lovely Cabalito daughter at our last two Oldenburg inspections (OHBS/GOV). She had a really fancy colt this year by Bon Balou who was named Premium and Foal of Distinction.

I also just saw something on FB about a 6 y/o Cabalito son that was Champion (pre-Green, I think) at a show this past weekend. He looked quite lovely in his pic.

ditto
well said

I know a few who have chosen to rebreed to him, two for hunters and one for an all arounder/older ammy dressage mount. The offspring is built sturdy and handsome from the small sample of the half dozen I have seen. One going around (winning) now in 3’ pre greens not only has a nice jump, but pins well in the hack in large classes. IMHO, nice stallion.

I actually own 3 of his sons! I do not think you can go wrong with him!!!

Thank you all so much for your opinions and responses.

How do you feel about this stallion crossed with a well bred, solidly built and extremely sound TB mare? Mare in question is a full TB (sibling to Gem Twist…) who is small in height but had a huge step, solid build and good mind.

Looking for talent and good form of course, but really want a horse that is suitable for a “good” amateur ride.

I have a Cabalito baby out of a Zodiak/TB mare. He is HUGE (17.1 when I got him as a 5 year old and I refuse to measure him again!). He is quiet (almost to a fault!), a good mover, and has a nice hunter jump. Very good looking horse (have been asked numerous times where he was imported from!). His biggest vice is honestly how quiet he is, very much a lazy spur ride, can be a bit difficult for my 5’5 self to really kick his butt into gear. Would get another in a heartbeat!

Love that!! The constant spur ride is what I have come to know and love…however it’s probably a little easier for me because I’m 6’3" lol!

The spur ride is one of the big reasons I bought him, I wanted a horse that’s the same temperament whether you ride him every day or once a week. We may not make it to the 1.30m, but I know I will get on the same horse every day, and don’t need to expect a rodeo or have to lunge for an hour if he got a few days off. He has a fantastic personality though, he is one of the favorites at every barn and has a little fan club too! He is very easy on the ground, and I can pretty well do anything with him without worrying about his reaction. If I could build-a-horse, I would just put him in a smaller package with a better engine, other than that he is the perfect amateur horse!

Sending you a PM!

I believe that I am the breeder of the foal you are considering purchasing in-utero…or at least the mare that I have in foal to Cabalito fits most of your description  If this is the case I would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the mare and why I chose Cabalito for her  I do expect a very fancy hunter prospect with good movement, a great jump and an amateur friendly temperament. I would also welcome you to come and visit us and meet Belle in person. Thank-you for considering our foal!
