Opinions on DHH crosses for jumping?

In the saddleseat world nobody would think twice about that horse!

Agreed, but I donā€™t think Ms. Kate is breeding for that world. And I donā€™t think an average amateur, even in the saddle seat world, wants to handle that animal.

Kate is breeding for an imaginary world of her own making.

I guarantee, that is nothing out of the ordinary for the Saddleseat world. Little bit of lunging and heā€™d be ready for a youth class. I kid, but only a bit.

I always want to give the horse the benefit of the doubt, but if he typically comes off the trailer looking like that every time, that would be a hard pass for me. If they think they should pick their front feet up off the ground as theyā€™re headed in my direction, no, thank you. And since the person handling him looked completely unsurprised by it, I have a feeling that was not an unusual occurrence.

He did not really look that wild to me under saddle, since I think thatā€™s how those horses are probably supposed to look. But it made my eye twitch to see them leading him back into the barn aisle and then the stall with the reins on his neck and the stirrups down.

It did look like he knew he had to duck his head a little bit to get under the banner on his way in. Lol.

I donā€™t think so with this particular stallion. I donā€™t think thereā€™s a video out there of this horse acting like heā€™s got an iota of brains. Meanwhile the same guy has a Friesian stallion that he lets his kids maul all over and the horse looks like a good citizen that can ā€œturn it upā€ when he gets in the ring.

That guy is an idiot and no one takes him serious in the actual show world. Heā€™s all about clicks not actual horsemanship.

Most ASBs and DHH are hot but extremely safe. They would never dream of putting a foot wrong and can easily have a decent riding kid on them. Itā€™s like a Porsche vs a Honda Civic.

Possibly. There are idiots in every world.

Hereā€™s a fun class.

Regardless of if heā€™s taken seriously or not, his other stallion seems like heā€™s not a psycho like the DHH.

The DHH stallion he has was imported and if you look at his previous videos with prior owner, he is very easy to handle.

Edit I looked at which Stallion. The Floris stallion Iā€™m not familiar with, I quit following him some years ago when he taught his Friesian to rear and just terrible handling of them.

His Hubert stallion is stunning.

I think people would be horrified at what the Saddleseat world would put a youth on!

The question posed by VHM was:
ā€œIf you were advising someone on whether or not to make an in utero purchase of a foal from a world renownedā€¦ but pretty hot (in terms of temperament) jumper stallionā€¦Would you advise them that this potential foal seemed like a good ā€œin uteroā€ investment for someone who wanted a horse to eventually do hunters or jumpers with a few years down the line? Orā€¦ would you have reservations due to the type and conformation of both the broodmare sire, and dam herself?ā€

(Bolding and italics are mine.)

She was NOT questioning whether someone should feel free to get whatever their heart desires, but rather asking someone if they would recommend a foal from that cross to someone else looking for a hunter or jumper prospect.

Anyone who does approve of that kind of cross for those purposes is pretty ignorant about form and function and needs to learn a lot more about conformation and its influence on biomechanics before they start passing on their ignorance to others by recommending something that is 99.9% likely to be completely unsuitable for those disciplines.

Again, nobody is going to look at the cross she posted to show in the hunters at WEC. Itā€™s not a question anyone is ever going to have to respond to. They likely arenā€™t even going to be looking at the KWPN book at all.

Someone who already likes that breed might have a fun time bebopping around in the local 2ā€™ 6" jumpers.

Kate is breeding for a market that exists in her head.

Are you sure about this? Maybe the problem with your opinion is that you donā€™t understand how an open book warmblood registry works.

Hahahaha. Just kidding.

@Virginia_Horse_Mom

If someone was looking to purchase in utero for hunters, I would not advise due to the conformation of the mare. The stallion would have to have some magic semen :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

If someone wanted it for a jumper, my answer wouldnā€™t change.

I also frown on breeding anything with a uterus, regardless of registry or breed, which seems to be what is happening upthread in reference to KS.

If someone wanted a baby by Stallion X, this was their price range and they didnā€™t care if they ribboned at shows, they were going to ride it and love it and have a ball regardless I would (after I got off Google/FB/called everyone looking for an in utero from a hunter type mare) say- woo hoo have fun. Maybe itā€™ll be a unicorn.

Itā€™s already a crap shoot when you have a proven hunter or jumper mare bred to a proven stallion - but the odds or better, right?

On paper, my Puddin should do the 1.50s. His full brother is still doing the high adults in his late teens. For various reasons (not just his weenie mom) heā€™s not a 1.50 horse.

Funny- when I first bought him (for my kid, I stole him :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:) I showed him at WEC in the hunters. I knew full well that unless every horse missed a lead, had a rail or missed a change- we could be at the bottom. I had a blast and most important- have great pictures (me with my eyes closed to a 3ā€™3 roll top, me laughing and patting). I love the hunters and itā€™s one of my favorite memories. My trainer actually shared the video on FB.

My first jumper show ever, at KHP, I fist bumped the air and was all smiles (16 time faults but this hunter lady was thrilled I got around colored butterfly jumps, chess pieces etc without schooling them ).

Now we have the happy medium of eventing. Guess what? Heā€™s probably not the right breed for that at higher levels since he doesnā€™t have a lot of ā€œbloodā€ . It will take consistent conditioning and who knows what else if we wanted to compete high level and keep him sound and happy.

Anyway- thatā€™s my rambling. I hope all the foals and mare have a safe place to land and live long and healthy lives loved by someone as much as I love mine, regardless of what they do.

But thatā€™s who Kate is marketing to, and the aspirations she claims her foals should have.

Thanks for your answers. I totally hear you and appreciate it.

I hope the foals and mares end up ok too. From her latest post on Facebook, it seems she is trying to sell 6 2024 DHH mare x jumper stallion foals in utero.

I hope all the equines involved get proper care and feeding and land with someone who can get them started. I understand that DHH can be very good tempered, even though hot. Butā€¦ crossing like this to a pro ride Warmblood? That might be tricky.

She can market to whomever she wants. It doesnā€™t mean theres an actual market

From the photos I saw of her horses, I really truly do not think that authorities in my area would intervene. On the regular, I see people on Facebook posting pics of neighbors horses that are much thinner, heads hung low and catatonic looking, hooves a foot long and foundered, and no one will come out to do anything about it if the horses have a source of water and any evidence of food. Horribly sad but true.

The hotness thing is interesting. Off property, especially alone, he can act like that stallion video when he gets off the trailer. But from just about day 1, I had my boyfriend trail riding him with me. Even though heā€™s a beginner rider, heā€™s a big guy who is confident and my horse does great with him. The bromigos lol

Iā€™m just rambling on and again, I do not breed horses and never will, but I do think that these types of horses have a lot of good qualities and Iā€™m glad I found mine. Maybe I liken it to dog breedingā€¦.i am 100% an adopt donā€™t shop person but I look at pit bull breeders differently than say corgi breeders. There are so freakin many unwanted pit bulls and mixes in the shelters, euthanized every day, that it really irks me to see people breeding them, whereas corgis seem to have buyers lined up in wait, and get rescued or adopted very quickly if something happens to their owners when they are older. So this Kate persons breeding program doesnā€™t trigger me right off the batā€¦.even if she is making outrageous claims. And I would really expect a person who was at the top of the sport with big bucks, to be able to discern any BS. Everything is buyer beware unfortunately.

I have also been involved in and exposed to a great many disciplines, and have the utmost respect for our high stepping friends. However, I canā€™t say Iā€™ve ever seen someone use a training fork (the running martingale) and a full bridle at the same time.

Believe that all you want, but the person who purchased the Chacco Blue filly that started this firestorm is not a newbie and has shown homebred horses at DAD, for example.
