Opinions on Leprince des Bois as a breeding stallion?

I really like the look of Leprince des Bois, former 4* stallion, owned by The Stallion Company. He is an elegant, athletic stallion who had a long career at the FEI level, and has strong eventing bloodlines.

However, I can’t seem to find much information at all on what he produces. I assume that even though he had a busy career (retired to stud last year), he was used for breeding to some degree, even if limited, during his competitive years. Does anyone have any experiences or stories about his offspring?

My only concern about him is that he looks to be a very strong ride in the cross country and show jumping phases. Honest and keen, which is great, but perhaps to the point of being too brave. Certainly doesn’t look like an amateur ride. But it’s hard to know whether that’s how he was trained, a bit to do with being a stallion, etc etc.

I am an amateur rider, breeding for myself, I ride up to FEI level but certainly not up to 4* level, so I do need ammy friendly horses. I do like to breed horses that are above all else, fun to ride and easy to get along with. I don’t mind a hotter horse but I am small and not particularly strong. The mare I am considering him for is almost full thoroughbred, very well bred for eventing, but did not compete herself. Her foals so far (2 bred by someone else, one bred by me) have been outstanding and good natured, however the oldest is rising 4 and not yet competing, so I don’t have a clear picture of their rideability yet. She is a solid mare and despite being mainly thoroughbred, (I mean about 90%+ thoroughbred, there’s just one “unknown” about 5 generations back), she benefits from a refining stallion. She has an excellent hind quarter, great leg conformation, but is slightly heavier in front than I would consider ideal. She is by Brilliant Invader. (Prolific 4* event horse and show jumper producer here in the Southern Hemisphere). On type, I think these two would be a good match, but it’s hard to assess the temperament of a horse on the other side of the world.

Thanks in advance for any insight you may have, PMs welcome if you don’t want to post here.

You could contact the owner–he is an “advocate”/salesman of his stallions but I noticed he shares what type of mares a stallion needs or does best with. As he has so many now he might also have a better suggestion for you if he does not think LDP is a fit. he is on facebook also.

Le Prince du Bois is by Yarlands summersong (Fleetwater Opposition x Welton Gazelle). We have a mare by Yarlands summersong and she has a wee bit of a temper. She produces nice foals (ATA national 3 yr old champion), so it could just be her not her bloodlines. I would highly suggest you ride some Selle Francais to see if you have enough tact to get along - I don’t find our mare particularly strong, just not a mug’s ride.

Thanks omare and mareslave. I will certainly be in touch with The Stallion Company at some point. I’m leaning more towards using chilled semen with this mare at the moment, which rules out Leprince, however I am curious to see what he has produced/is producing as I do really like the horse. I might use him with another mare in the future. I’m surprised that my googling has not revealed any horses by him at all, I had hoped that some of his progeny would be out there eventing, maybe they are in France but I can’t find them online. I did find this footage on youtube of some relatives… nice enough types without being spectacular, and some “interesting” riding going on! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2RnrgXWR8puvLUVhYdVGEA
