I’m going to fence part of my back yard so my SO can bring his three dogs down when he comes to visit. I want a black fence but that only seems to be in vinyl. I have no experience with this kind of fence. Is it as good as galvanized chain link for keeping dogs in? I want a black fence because I think it will look better in my yard - but not at the expense of the dogs.
Do you mean the metal chain link that is coated in vinyl? If so, that is what we have, although in green. We replaced the original plain galvanized chain link fence “fabric” with it, utilizing the original posts. We’ve been happy with it – the green is less obtrusive in appearance, and it is actually a somewhat sturdier fence than the original.
Not sure. When I said I wanted black, the fence guy said “ok, black vinyl”. There is a black chain link fence near my SO’s house and it looks just like a regular chain link fence but I haven’t actually gone up to it and inspected it. He probably did mean coated in vinyl as the price is a bit higher.
Coated metal is OK.
Plastic is not.
If you have diggers, be sure you have a bottom ‘rail’ on the chain link, fill in any gaps due to uneven ground.
Thanks D_Bald. I’ll have to ask my SO if his dogs dig. I don’t think they do since they don’t escape at his house.
Oh, and Jarpur, I did find out that it is coated chain link so that makes me feel better.
What kind of dogs does he have? Some dogs can climb a chain link fence.
Just medium sized mutts. I’m getting a 5’ fence like he has at his house so I don’t think they’ll climb out. I can always run hot wire around the top if I need to.
I would imagine they mean vinyl coated metal. I would definitely recommend a bottom rail, whether they dig or not Without one, a dog can push at the section between the posts and push it outward, which can make it possible to get under even if they don’t dig.
