Ordering custom chaps

I finally get to order a pair of custom chaps
I spoke with my saddler about them and he sent over his options list and prices. Oh my, so many options!!!

Smooth out or rough out?
Top grain or split grain?
Light weight or regular weight?
Buckle back or concho back? One concho or two?
How long should the fringe be?
Floral leather tops or basket weave?
Dyed leather background or regular?

What does everyone’s chaps looks like? I’d love to see some ideas…as you can imagine this is going to cost a pretty penny so I want them to be perfect. So excited!!

Why are you getting chaps? That’s really the first question. Work chaps? Show chaps? Really can’t answer without that info.

And what event you are competing in - that will change several answers as well.

My chaps are ultrasuede and I show Arabian Western Pleasure. You can go several directions based on the discipline being shown.

Well that would help huh?

I ride reining horses and these would be show chaps.
They will be in the pen 30-40 times a year.

Damn - I wish I could show that much! For reining - you can pretty much do whatever. If you plan on showing in a plain button up, play up your chaps.

And go with light weight.

I personally have a pair of Ultrasuede chaps in black with ostrich uppers. I kept my plain so I could still use them for horsemanship if I wanted to.

I’m dying to get a pair of buttermilk tan smooth leather chaps…it’ll be a while until I can afford those!

I do normally go conservative…a black or white button up with a black pad or a tan print.
I definitely think I want to snazz up my chaps a little since everything else is plain.

This is one of the kids I’m lucky enough to show this year. He’s a real special guy.
(Excuse my hand, I’m working on it. I have a serious phobia of getting jammed and thus the bad habit began)
