Orlov Rostopchin

Does anyone know much about this breed? Are the stallions eligible for inspection with any of the NA based registries? I’ve heard of Abrikos, any other information? I’m quite intrigued

I’m sorry I know little about them (apart from the origins of them as a breed) in relation to breeding and approvals to be gained here in NA but I was the rider of one about 30-odd years ago and she was a lovely lovely mare. Super little jumper and fast. I evented her and she was a fun and respectfully responsive mare. She was small framed and only about 15.2hh and was not a young mare; if I remember correctly she was around 18 or 19 at the time but this did not hinder her in any way. She was black and had a lovely frame although I remember she had a slightly unattractive head on her, not sure if that is the breed or just her or just my being younger and used to riding big beautiful Hanoverians at the time.

I wonder if a newer registry may be the best way forward with getting breeding approvals, perhaps RhPSI? They do seem to be a rather open minded registry.

Hope there are others who can give you better knowledge on them than just my (many moons ago) youthful fond memories

A man I took clinics with named Alex Chterba use to ride/train one that stood stud way back in the day (* I think *). I am trying to find him but can’t.

I am pretty sure RPSI would allow in their books if approved.

O-R are a rare breed with only about 500 worldwide (last I looked). I had the pleasure of owning a fabulous O-R gelding that I competed at FEI dressage. They do tend to be smaller, very refined, dark with little white. Mine was super hot and had amazing gaits.

There have been a few O-R imported and some are being crossed with Trak, Tb’s etc. I don’t think they are accepted into any German studbooks. They are heavily TB in origin and quite different from the modern WB. I think there is some frozen semen still available in the US. At one point there was some small breeding organization started to register them…not sure how active it is.

I would love to have another…they are amazing horses!

I always liked these horses, but find very limited information available on them. I love their gaits and they look like they would be wonderful event horses. Too bad there are not more of them around!

This intrigued me:

The most influential foundation stallions were Smetanka and Sultan. Smetanka was obtained with huge amounts of gold in the East and was hand walked , heavily guarded, through all of Europe, into Russia. His skeletal remains can be seen at the Moscow Museum of Horsebreeding , along with his portrait.

Here is a video of Abrikos, which they call a Russian Warmblood.

He’s beautiful

I was really interested to see that his sire’s sire (Absent) an Akhal Teke was also an Olympic Champion. Definitely some family dressage talent!

Don’t know much about them, but ran into some when we rode at Richochet Ranch in Mendacino -

My trainers have an O-R that they teach lessons off of. She’s very, very pretty (beautiful, dishy head) but very hot. She’s grown up a lot in the 5 years or so that I’ve known her and is less unreasonably spooky than she was when they first got her, but she’s still quite hot. She has a very fun personality on the ground, not a mean bone in her body. She jumps decently, but rather flat and somewhat stereotypically Arabian in style.
I can’t say I enjoy riding her, but the hot little things aren’t really my cup of tea. Beautiful horse though, she could have walked out of a painting.

The fact that they make good endurance horses makes me believe they probably do have lots of energy and get up n go.

Found another video, kind of sums it up I think – I can imagine riding this horse and it going one way and me the other!

My schoolmaster is super hot and super spooky. It never got better, even in his 20’s, lol. However, you would never find a horse with a better work ethic. LOVES working and never says no.

Is this breed also known as an Orlov Trotter? Wasn’t that horse Balagur an Orlov Trotter?

I think they are different?

They are different. O-R are also known as Russian Riding horses. It is a closed registry and were bred for royalty. There are some good articles online.

The Orlov Trotter is hard to find information on also. They are more of a harness bred horse to my understanding. Very nice looking IMO.
