Orphaned 10 day old foal: Nurse mare found and is now bonded

I desperately need the collective COTH hive mind to give me options to have this little colt survive and thrive. Breeder and Vet are looking for a nurse mare. The farm is located in Alder Flats, Alberta. There is another mare who is about to foal, so maybe she would be willing to adopt him and milk replacement pellets could be used to supplement his diet. Ideas?

I do not have any advise on how to care for the little guy, but also try cross posting this in the breeding forum??

I hope someone has a solution for you. I bottle fed a colt 20 yrs ago and it was not fun. He was a touch older than your colt, but not by much.

Definitely post in the Breeding forum, and while they’re in the US, I’d contact ColdSpring Nurse Mares to see if they have an CN connections.

Another nursing mare may help out, and if it’s that + milk replacer (I’d use actual milk powder, not pellets) fed igloo-style, then that’s definitely better than truly orphaned and being bottle-fed

I belong to Dressage Breeder FB group. Thanks for your suggestions.

I am cross posted in the breeding forum. Waiting to here what the breeder and her vet have decided to do. If nurse mare can’t be found I hope the little one learns to bucket feed, igloo-style.

My breeder is getting Deb’s nurse mare. Thanks for posting the website. Sad that Deb’s foal died and very grateful that Deb is willing to let her mare look after mine.

I will keep my fingers crossed for a Momma and new baby bonding. It takes a village, and some years the only joy is in helping out another baby. My condolence to Deb. Losing a little one is heart wrenching. What a great soul to help out another. Please let us know how the foster family is getting along.

The mare is named Angel and is living up to her name. She immediately claimed her as her own. Both are doing well.
