Oster clipmaster blades

I don’t get it. I have the big oster clipmaster and I always make sure my horse/pony is bathed and very clean before clipping. I always oil and have blade wash and cool lube handy and USE. I will be clipping and all of a sudden, they just stop cutting. I change tension, dip in blade wash, oil…whatever is needed but nothing helps. It is like all of a sudden the blades dull. So I usually end up buying a new set of blades often. wHAT AM i DOING WRONG OR DO THEY SUDDENLY DULL?

When was the last time you had them serviced? My clippers had a bearing that needed replacing which definitely affected how they clipped. I get my clippers serviced when I get my blades sharpened. Mostly they check them over, tighten things that need to be tightened and lube up the parts that need to be lubed.

This happened to my Clipmasters shortly before the motor burned out. They would turn on, but they wouldn’t clip the hair at all. It was all of a sudden, and I had only done about 10 clips with them when they broke.

I have a Shetland Sheep and 2 Great Pyrenees dogs to clip every year. Just did the sheep. After buying a new set of blades the beginning of spring the last three years, I finally decided enough of that and researched sharpening my own blades and it’s really very simple and made a HUGE difference, even over new blades.

My husband is something of a knife nut and had several very good whetstones. I simply took the clipperhead of my big shears apart; cleaned it thoroughly with oil and WD40; sharpened both blades by gently swirling the cutting surfaces against the lightly oiled whetstone; put everything back together and those suckers cut like a hot knife through butter! Even new blades have not cut as well.

If your clipper blades are not as sharp as they need to be, it is putting extra duress on the clipper motor to get the job done and probably causing overheating. That and any gunk which may have built up behind the clipper blades. Might be worth your dissassembling the clipper heat, giving it a thorough cleaning and sharpening the blades yourself. There are youtube videos. YMMV.
