OTTB Mare Pedigree thoughts? Holy Bull, Gone West, Great Notion?

Seems like some names I recognize, but that’s not worth much! LOL! Friend is going to look at her for an event prospect, but I’m always interested in the breeding when it’s a mare! Would love to tell her the horse should jump well, have a great temperament, or make nice babies someday-lol! Or that it should be a cruddy moving, mean one that should never be bred! LOL! And yes, I fully realize you ride the horse, not the pedigree

She is probably more a huntery type mover than anything. Great Above/MinMac are eventer favorites but I usually see them with a sweepy stride better suited for hunters. Elusive Quality/Gone West seems to also be favored by the eventer crowd. Re: disposition, I don’t see any red flags in her pedigree. HB has a reputation for friendly horses around here BUT I have seen in other states people who think HB has hard horses.

Pedigree aside, depending on how she looks currently compared to the picture on PQ, she’s got some questionable conformation. Kinda hard to tell, but she looks ewe-necked. She’s definitely got sickle hocks and is goose-rumped/ has a “hunter’s bump”. In other words, it will be much harder to get her to round into a frame since her neck doesn’t naturally curve that way, she’s predisposed to hock issues, and doesn’t have the greatest hind end for propulsion. If she truly does have the hunter’s bump, that points to sacroiliac strain, another red flag for issues. Please tell your friend to very carefully judge the horse in front of her.

I think this is a very good example of how a young horse, physically immature and race-fit, can look very bad in a still photograph. She has some conformation flaws but not what you mentioned, IMVHO.

I don’t see sickle hock at all. I can see she’s got a steeper croup but goose rump seems to be aesthetically limiting and not physically limiting. Some people think the horses with a steeper pelvis have an easier time stepping under yourself…

FWIW her neck just looks like classic case of improper muscling to me.

Sire is a G1 placed son of Elusive Quality from the same family as Talinum. I adored Talinum, although he never did anything at stud. There were 3 of his daughters for sale at a Fasig Tipton January sale; all lovely huge fillies that weren’t runners. They seemed like perfect riding prospects.

1st dam has a stakes placed colt by Dance with Ravens, and also has an up and coming Jump Start foal. 2nd dam is the nice listed winner La Turka and the immediate family of Cash Deposit, champion 2 year old in Canada.

She’s PA bred, with a nice compact body (i’m looking at the pic on pedigree query http://www.pedigreequery.com/sixtieth+and+dune) and possibly back at the knee a tad. That would be my one concern for an athletic undertaking. The other foals from this mare don’t have a lot of starts, but it’s a very young first dam. 2nd dam La Turka was durable with at least least 49 starts, and her foals had many more starts.

She’s pretty and very feminine!

I didn’t see the sickle hock, and attributed the neck to youth and being stood up poorly.

Poor thing; we sit here and pick her apart online from all over the world. I promise that if anyone judge me on a still photo, there would be some very unkind words about my build!

I know a photo is but a moment in time, and conformation can change somewhat as they mature. I’m probably incorrectly calling it sickle hocks, but she just has too much angulation in the joint; the point of her hock doesn’t line up with the point of her buttock like is ideal-- she’s camped too far out behind. I just wanted to make sure whoever goes to look at her looks at the whole picture, not just what the pedigree portends for sport, or even how well she’s moving now.

Here are some other pics and a video link:

Appreciate the feedback both positive and negative, I’m not sure how sounds she really seems in the video, but it appears it’s on uneven ground. Friend has no upper level aspirations, but already owns one with soundness issues so I know she doesn’t want walk into that again! But she buys on temperament more than anything. For good or bad as that may be.

here is a second picture of her:

Thanks BW-I saw that one as well, I’m assuming that was when she was on the track last year (last race was 11/2014). I think the one Real Rush isn’t fond of is more current actually. Did you see the video? Link here:

I did see the video… has me wondering if she’s barefoot and needs shoes. She is cute though.

The other picture just goes to show how different a horse can look in a still photo… I probably wouldn’t have picked up it was the same horse, honestly. Yes, looks like it’s from her racing days.

Oh yes, still photos are often a small part of the overall “picture” I actually like her better in the track photo, and that was likely aslmost a year ago!
