The background: I got my 4 yo OTTB this spring. Have been hacking him all over the place plus lots of training rides and lessons with my trainer. I’ve been begging her if we can jump him, because based on my extensive TB pedigree expertise (ie, reading COTH when I should be productive), he should be a great jumper!
I’ll let the pics and my guy speak for himself…
(apologies for awkward formatting me old and tech hard…)
Yes!! My 4 year old and I did our first vertical yesterday, and cantered some crossrails and his style seems to be “fling legs at jump with the least amount of effort possible and see what happens” and I’m super out of practice in a saddle I don’t think I like jumping in, which doesn’t help!
Your guy is super cute!! We should make an Awkward Jumping Baby club

Is this horse jumping in side reins?
I think that is just the regular reins on this bridle hooked under the stirrup leathers on either side to keep them out of the way.
Awkward baby jumps are the best! So cute
To keep reins out of the way during lunging. Take reins off from over the head. Take both reins so going back towards horse. Take both reins up on the offside and over neck behind ears . Twist underneath neck with reins on off side and secure on nearside with throatlatch.
Not side reins! TBKite was right. I can see how the photo looks like that thought. Skip99 your mare’s form looks pretty good! Rainweasley, funny how yours throws his legs forward and mine throws his leg back. Silly babies.
Thanks for clarifying. I would still be weary of attaching reins behind a stirrup when jumping, it can catch the mouth.
I’m jealous of your baby, she jumps cute!
It’ll be interesting seeing if the style changes as they figure things out. One of my best little eventers/jumpers was HORRIBLE in the beginning so I’m kinda hoping this guy follows that path
