Has anyone ridden there? what are trails like? is the bike/horse mix pleasant or Cave Run-ish? Thanks for any info.
I’ve never even heard of that one - where in Kentucky is it?
I’m always interested in trying a new place.
I haven’t been there for a few years, but when I was there the horses had seperate trails from the mountain bikes and ATV’s. The trails were very well maintained and there was alot of variety in the trails. I enjoyed riding beside the river and had some good hill climbs while I was there. I would love to go back, but eveyone has told me it is an increasing pain in the bum to cross the boarder with horses. I hope you’re talking about the park in NY state.
JB, I hadn’t heard of it either. It’s near Brandenburg, just west of Fort Knox (SW of Louisville). It’s run by the KY Dept of Fish & Wildlife and is about 2200 acres, so might be worth the haul.
Paulosey, sorry, wrong state.
Its right outside of Ft. Knox. It was closed for a few years but open now, I believe. We trailered out there from Knox years ago and it was beautiful. we stayed out for hours if i remember correctly…
I found a site that said Otter Creek had about 12 miles of trail - sounds like a good, leisurely day-ride. It would be a long haul for me just for one day, but it looks pretty.
On a different note, this might be of interest:

I just rode there last weekend. We rode about 10 miles. Nice pretty trails along the creek, and access to a riding on a sandy beach on the Ohio River. Well maintained trails, not too challenging, and not much mud last weekend. We didn’t see any bikes on the horse trails, I think they have separate trails.
Here’s a pic of one of the creek crossings:

Thanks for the link, JB! So many trails, so little time…
TheOtherHorse, if you took that photo, it was what sparked my interest! I saw it on As Seen Through Horses Ears FB page. Thanks for the info, sounds like it might be worth a road trip.
Small world. I love the Through Horses Ears group!
FYI, Otter Creek is $10 for a daily riding pass. There’s not much more trails than what we did. You could add on 2 more miles maybe. So not a huge place, but interesting and worth going at least once. Last summer when I went there, the beach of the Ohio River was dry and firm and I was able to canter down a long stretch of beach… so cool! Last weekend it was kind of deep silty sand, so we didn’t get to do the beach gallop. Later in the year maybe if it dries out… Also, possible safety concerns-- there is a gun range adjacent within earshot, and you ride along and under a raised train track, so if your horse is spooky beware.
Thanks for the info, all good to know. Our ponies are used to gunfire (thanks neighbors…) but haven’t seen trains before. We’ll be prepared. A canter on the beach would be lovely!
And one of these years I am going to gallop (tolt?) on a Scandinavian beach with an Icelandic’s crazy mane blowing in my face.
