Our dog bolted Saturday afternoon. Has not returned home. Any ideas for what we can do? Update! Abby’s home! See#110

Crying tears of joy for you and your whole family!

I can almost hear the crying from her, my daughter had been out of town for 5 days, and the sounds coming out of her BC cross when she came home would have been much like Abby made I imagine.

So happy she’s back with you. Sounds like she is too.

Soooo happy for you!!! I’ve been checking and checking this thread!!

As for re-feeding. Just go a little slow; I doubt she is really in danger so long as you don’t let her gorge herself. If she had been missing for a month I would think differently, but even though she may have lost a lot of weight in the last week, my guess is she’s still digesting normally. Small meals several times a day is probably the best bet. Kibble and probably nothing else (nothing fatty like bacon, even though I’m sure she wants it!!)

Definitely make sure she has water but also maybe don’t let her drink and drink; if she’s dehydrated she might try but best to offer a little every hour or so than let her fill her belly.

Yaaaaayyyyyy !!!

omg that is making me cry, too

The thinking part of her brain DID want to come home! Maybe the instinctive part was driving, though. Or she really didn’t know how.

I don’t know why dogs can’t back-track their own scent to get home … maybe that is more wild-brain interference.

I know you’ll be careful that she doesn’t get the chance to run again. It’s instinctive, it isn’t that they want to go, but apparently once a runner probably always a runner.

Think about taking the signs down … also think about replacing at least some of them with another sign “ABBY IS FOUND! Thank everyone for your help!” Not that everyone did help, of course, but that kind of positive feedback can encourage people to make the effort the next time they see a sign, then see the dog. Instead of figuring someone else will call.

Those signs worked !!! Yay Abby !!! Bigger Yay to Abby’s Mom & Dad !!!

Sometimes I think if something scared them and they bolted, they don’t think that it’s safe to go home…

@going_gray I’m silently crying happy tears that she’s home. My dog wouldn’t eat much when he was boarded and would be skinny if I left him 5-7 days. I’d just feed as normal with maybe an extra 1/4-1/2 portion for a few days and he’d get right back to normal in a week or so. You don’t want to feed too much at once, so split it 2-3 times a day.

Add me to the list of emotionally invested in this outcome.

So glad she is home, I am sure she will rebound quickly. Maybe some “soaked” kibble or extra water in her chicken/rice to help her rehydrate and keep her digestive track going.

Reminds me of the vet who mentioned my dog’s ID tax was uncluttered. Name in big letters on one side and just 2 phone numbers on the other. All could be read at some reasonable distance.

So happy for you all!
