Well, folks, we need prayers, jingles, and lots of positive thoughts this morning. Abby did not want her breakfast this morning and her breathing was not her normal respiration. We got her into the vets at 8:30 and a vet saw her pretty quickly.

They did chest X-rays and a blood panel on her. She has a spot of pneumonia in her lungs. And the X-rays showed some contusion to her abdomen/lungs.

She has a fever too. Temp was 105. Normal for dogs I think is 99 -105.

Vet said she thinks she got brushed by a car while running. She had some fur rubbed off on one side of her abdomen. I thought she had maybe rubbed hair off while scooting under the flatbed trailer she hid under for several days. She is not sore there, however.

She has had one antibiotic now. Big thing but she ate it. Beef flavored. She will get one each morning. Her gums were/are nice and pink. We will check them a lot for any changes.

She did eat food (chicken) and kibble from my hands so that was good.

She pooped and peed this morning.

We got her into the vets Monday afternoon. Her signs were normal. No fever. Vet didn’t think we needed to do a blood panel at that time. But today, yes. Hungry dog not eating food was very worrisome!

We will continue to watch her and hope she gets her perky self back again. Yesterday she was telling our horses to back off the fencing. That’s one of her “jobs.”

Thanks, all!

Continuing prayers & jingles! Abby’s large support and cheering section is still with her I’m sure!

As I understand it, she started this adventure young and healthy, so that is a big positive to help her get through all the aftermath. I wish she weren’t feeling bad!

Not showing soreness is something I wouldn’t take as a clear indicator. Could be that her instinct right now is to not flinch even if it hurts. Some types of dogs are exceptionally stoic. And some react that way when they are feeling stressed and insecure. Of course her biggest stress and insecurity is now removed, but she probably still has some aftereffects.

Hope our Abby is feeling better soon. She could not have better or more loving care, that is for sure! :heartpulse:

I’ve made bone broth for my dogs when they are ill and not wanting to eat. It was the only way I could get my old bluetick to eat in her final days. I’ll post the recipe if you like.

Sandysmom, thank you! That would be really nice.

Abby ate the food I gave her from my hand when we got back from the vet. Small bites of chicken and some boiled egg. But not from her bowl.

Thanks again!

Some anti-nausea medicine (cerenia) might help if she doesn’t feel like eating. Especially if the antibiotic also makes her further upset. Also a probiotic is always good to give with an antibiotic, like fortiflora or proviable. Another bland diet like boiled ground beef and rice might be tempting to her.

Get a couple of pounds of femur or knuckle type bones. You can also use turkey necks. Drizzle with olive oil or sesame oil. I use sesame oil as it has anti inflammatory properties. Roast at 400F for about 45 minutes. Place in crock pot, cover with water or low sodium broth. Add a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. You can add a can of pumpkin puree or a sweet potato, diced. Add a tablespoon of turmeric for anti inflammatory properties. Simmer in crackpot for at least 6-8 hours up to 24. The bones are great for chewing. If you use turkey necks, they will be very soft. You can puree them in a food processor and add them back to the broth. You can give straight in small amounts or serve over rice or kibble.

Oh this is interesting, they just blend right up? Might be a new use for my chicken necks then since I never make as much stock as I think I will.

Yeah, they’re mostly cartilage so if you cook them long enough they’re very soft and will blend right up.

Abby ate her 5:00 dinner tonight! And licked her bowl too. So good to see that eating is coming back. Her respiration is better now as well. More antibiotics to come this week.

She slept on our bed all night last nite. Wasn’t doing well and needed to be close to us. Hopefully she will continue to improve!

Thank you all for your support and ideas! That bone broth recipe might be great for people too!

I hope she just keeps getting better! She went through some stuff, she’s an overthinker type, I hope she’s just adjusting back.

meat-flavored baby food is another easy go-to for animals that don’t have much appetite - especially if you warm it so it gets nice and stinky.

many jingles for complete recovery! border collies are the best.

@ Sandysmom if a recipe that cooks for 6 to 24 hours isn’t total dedication to an animal, I don’t know what is. It sounds completely awesome. <3

Thanks. It’s done in a crockpot so not a lot of trouble. I made it for my late bluetick hound. She was emaciated when she was rescued so we wanted to add calories without bulk. It was adapted from a human recipe.

Hi, all! Best news ever! Abby perked up yesterday afternoon and started eating her meals that I now am giving her every four hours.

Her first antibiotic at the vets must have really worked a doggy miracle! Second one this morning went down the hatch perfectly.

We were thinking she got off pretty well last Monday after her first vet visit with just losing weight. We were just praying that she was still pretty healthy.

But, pneumonia isn’t unusual for a dog or human being lost for several days and suffering hypothermia, which I’m sure she did.

She’s had several meals now between yesterday and this morning. Eating as soon as I put her bowl down. She’s getting a probiotic as well. Drinking water normally.

We are taking the couple who found her out to dinner tonight as a big thank you! Great Mexican restaurant that apparently we all love!

Rhonda, our mail carrier, is getting a thank you card and some lovely chocolates. So many people were looking for her, it just makes me cry again. Thank you all!
