Hi! This is kind of a superficial question, but does anyone know if there are nylon cross ties that don’t fade in the sun? I have an outdoor wash rack and the cross ties there have faded so bad, they’re not even black anymore, they’re like a washed out brown purple color.
Ultimately, no. UV damage is no joke (that’s what’s happening to unprotected skin when you’re outside!), but black nylon seems to fade to uglier colors than say, red.
Theoretically you could dye them again, or use natural twine (my preference since it blends in and you don’t see it). There are some UV protection sprays that could delay the inevitable but personally I’d just pick a different color or material so I didn’t have to worry about it!
Nope.
The sun always wins.
Especially in Florida.
I have an outdoor cross-tie area and the blue crossties from Dover seem to have weathered well. They are probably four or five years old at this point and I don’t see any obvious sunbleaching on them. They might be a shade or two lighter than they were when I originally got them but they are still distinctly blue.
Thanks for the responses! I was thinking of maybe trying chain cross ties? My local feed store sells them and some of the barns I’ve been to use them, but I’ve never personally used them. Are they safe?
Rubber covered chain is my preference, but either way use a breakaway between the chain and the snap that attaches to the halter if you can. I’ve seen chain ties go flying when the wall side breakaway snaps and they’re like projectiles. Not too different from a broken snap flying off, but with more weight. You wouldn’t want a horse to gallop off dragging too long of a chain either.
YMMV. Chain ties don’t scare me, but I like a horse side release mechanism
