Outdoor (weatherproof) tack storage...plastic cabinets?

Not really sure what I’m looking for, so not sure what to google. I’d like some type of storage thing that I can leave out by Maresy’s pasture to hold brushes, her halter, the first aid kit, supplies…stuff. Right now, her halter is hanging from the fence (fine with that, but Florida weather is destructive) and I keep everything else in totes in the house (not ideal). I’m thinking one of those stand-up ones with cabinet doors and shelves?

If it was large enough and weatherproof enough to hold my saddle, great, but it’s not a requirement. I’m find lugging the saddle back and forth, and I’ve kind of gotten used to having it as home decor when it’s not in use!

*disclaimer that this is only until I can hoodwink DH into adding on to the run-in stall and making a real tack room!

Hmm, you have to factor in humidity as well as rain-proofing and theft-proofing. anything that works outside in Florida’s rainy season for the last two might cause trouble by holding in humidity. Any gear I confined in Haiti got rather gross rather quickly.

My horses are home now, but the last place I boarded I had the same problem, so I bought one of those mini Rubbermaid Roughneck sheds from Lowes. It. Is. Awesome. It is now my tack shed at my own farm, snuggled into my run-in. It’s hot, humid, & rainy here, I put a padlock on the doorlatch for security, it’s been perfect. The key is making sure you set it level, I used a layer of square pavers underneath it &, er, some redneck shimming, LOL.

It’s been well worth the price (~$300), in service for 4 years now & I put in a free-standing 3-saddle rack, wire shelves & pegboard on one side for bridles. I believe it’s the 4’ version. A friend gave me another 8’ one that is my feed shed.

I have those absorbent crystals in my trailer to prevent mould…sort of works.

I have been using these for many years to hold my halters, brushes and longeing equipment by the training pen.

They have weathered rain and snow and kept everything dry. However, I do not live in a humid climate.

Wildlifer…those things are huge! They look awesome! Must look into those…

Bearcat, I’ve had similar boxes in the past, but I never tested them outside. Rain doesn’t get in?

I used a smaller shed: like this.

The one I had was big enough to fit a saddle stand/saddle in one half and small standing shelves/boxes/etc on the other side. It did fine in Texas humidity.

However, with those designs you do have to have them on LEVEL ground, or they warp and get gaps between the doors or top.

And they are water resistant, but not sealed, so in a strong storm with blowing rain stuff inside could get wet.

Our rats would eat holes in the plastic sheds, not so easily in the trunks, like the Stanley trunks with wheels and a handle.
We have one of those that has not been chewed up yet:

They have those sheds and boxes in metal also.

I’ve had them under 2 feet of snow and everything was still dry when they thawed out (but again, I don’t know about humidity.)

Does this look like the one you have?

Why not spend a little more and get a small shed? Metal or wood? Maybe put it up on blocks or pallets, plenty of room to store equipment, etc. and ability to secure it.

or look locally at some of those places that sell wood sheds, might find a repo one cheaper.

Was thinking about this thread the other day, glad I found it!

I think this looks like the one wildlifer has

Looks like that one would make a great small tack room.
Some of those are not deep enough for saddles, but that one is.

I have something much smaller (and cheaper). it won’t hold a saddle, unless you leave a shelf out.

I think you’ll have major mold problems. If you’re going to store things outside I’d build a well sheltered box with excellent ventilation.

Surprisingly, in intense heat/humidity of Carolina summers, no mold. They’re weather-tight if you take the time to follow ALL assembly directions for joints & mine’s been hurricane’d, ice storm-d, chewed on by a random loose horse, moved in the back of my truck, and still peachy.

And yep, froglander, that’s it, if you didn’t get my pm already! And the larger one that’s my feed shed was actually lying disassembled in a friend’s pasture for about a year (she’d used it before building their larger barn) under weeds before she kindly gave it to me when I built the farm. I put it back together & it’s good as new!

wildlifer, did you roach their manes!?!

Ok so now I reeeeeally want the big fancy one that wildlifer has. But yikes that’s a lot of money. :frowning: I like the idea of the smaller one off of amazon, thanks for sharing that.

I think at this point, I would still keep my actual tack inside. Saddle and bridle. But if I can toss everything else in this trunk and not make several trips back and forth every time I ride, that would definitely make my life easier!
