Overview of joint supplement research

Skipping the fact this is a supplements company selling their own product, is the general overview of oral joint supplement research accurate and up to date? If so, it’s a useful resource.

A useful summary- tho I have not taken the time to check the references yet. I do get frustrated reading vet research due to the small numbers in the studies, but I know I am applying the standards from human medical research! Not a fair comparison.

A useful summary, thanks for posting! I do take some issue with their claims that MSM neutralizes free radicals and is an anti-oxidant. I looked at their references. It’s a fun term to throw around in human medicine, but there’s a reason why anti-oxidants don’t clinically prevent oxidative stress and oxidative damage to cells. Free radicals exists for such a short period of time in cells that they literally mostly affect the proteins they are next to. The article never mentions NADPHs, which literally make superoxide and hydrogen peroxide in cells. Same with nitric oxide. It can diffuse across cell membranes but it doesn’t go very far. It can do huge things in cells that affect the tissue (i.e vasodilation) but I’m not sure if the amounts in this product are enough to be effective and are encapsulated to diffuse slowly over time. Free radicals and anti-oxidants are such a tricky field of study. I say this because I’ve studied nitric oxide a lot and worked with NADPHs a bunch. Superoxide and free radicals are such a PITA to study and are nearly impossible to detect. Yea, there are outdated methods to detect them but all of the methods have severe caveats. The field pulls it’s hair out.

So, I’m always skeptical about the efficacy of products that claim to target free radicals.
