paddocks with good ankle support?

I have old ankle problems and flexing my ankle too much leads to some pretty significant pain. I’m using an ankle brace, which helps some, but it could be better. Vetwrap worked better to immobilize it for longer rides, but that adds up at 3 long rides a week.

Any advice for good comfy boots that would give more ankle support than my Dublin Venturers? I’m doing mostly longer trail rides at a trot and canter, so am out of the saddle a good bit posting and standing in the stirrups. Maybe the Mountain Horse ones that look like the Ariat Terrains? I tried the Ariats on and they don’t come up high enough to offer any support at all.

I can’t wear regular lace-up paddocks without them hurting my feet, so I’ve gone for zippers of pull-ons recently. But they don’t seem to offer much in those styles that would give much stability to my ankle and would also me comfortable for long rides.

Just an idea, but have you thought about more of a work boot?

It would have the heel you need to be safe, but since they aren’t specifically made for riding and ankle flexibility, you might find something more supportive.

I like my Ariat Hannover paddocks with lace front, elastic sides and a zip up the ack. They are no longer made of course:eek: ut you can probably find something similar.
I also love my ThinLine half pad and MDC Intelligent stirrups set at 90 degrees.

I have the EZ Ride stirrups, which help some as well. The ThinLine pad never did much for me or the horses though.

The last Ariats I had sucked quality-wise, but maybe the Treadstep paddocks that lace up the front and zip up the back would be good? They get good reviews. And since SP has the free return shipping on sized items, if they don’t work with my ankle brace I could always return them.

I have the Tredstep Paddock boots with the laces in the front and zipper in the back and they have held up very well. The only issue i had with them was that they were not tight enough on my ankle. They come with elatic laces in the front so I just knotted the elastic to make them tigher but you could also replace the laces in the front with regular laces.

I have found that I NEED to have lace up paddock boots for them to provide enough support for my ankle.

I have seen some used, but in highly newish condition paddock boots at a local feed store which look like they have a reinforced ankle - very nice boots, and a ladies size seven or an eight, forget which. They are located at Lakeside Feed and Grain in Guilford, CT, if that size works for you. These must be very high end boots, I have not seen any looking so well made before, and are asking $60.00 used. They are laced, well lined, and as I said, very reinforced in the ankle. It might be worth it to give them a call and ask them about the boots, if you think these would work well for you. PM me if you need me to go take a picture of them. I could do it in the next few days.
