Pain when pressing on just one spine bone? Anyone?

Hello,

I’m wondering if anybody has experienced this. For the past several months, I have had just one spine bone that if I lean up against something hard, or press on it, it really hurts/feels bruised. Besides that, I forget all about it. I’ve also seemed to have developed some muscle knots around that area. It’s located about where my bra strap crosses.

I do have an appointment with a spine specialist for 2 weeks from now, but I’m curious and googling only scares me (Cancer, tumors, scary stuff! etc etc!).

I’m a generally healthy 25 year old. I do have a history of hip problems/surgeries since I was young but never have had back pain so I don’t believe the two are related. I also tend to be a hypochondriac, since I was little with the hip surgeries and also with a fluke case of pancreatitis two years ago - I get worried and anxious.

Has anybody ever had similar pain? I only notice it when I press on it, and it hurts on the bone and the side of the bone. I also occasionally feel it if I bend over to the ground.

Thanks so much, best wishes,

Nanerpus

Interested to see responses as I had this once and it resolved on its own. About 3 years ago I came off my horse and landed hard square on my tailbone, saw stars. Soon after I had one painful vertebra right under my bra strap. It only hurt if I touched it, as if it were bruised, and once in a while if I touched my toes I could feel it. Otherwise, I didn’t even know it was there.

I was just too lazy to ever make an appointment to find out about it, as I only remembered it was there every so often.

It took about 18 months but went away.

you may have muscles and/or ligaments in the area in tetanic contractions

Do you by any chance have long hair? I was wearing my long hair in a single braid often. Developed the same kind of sore spot on my back bone right between my shoulder blades. Right where the scrunchie on the end of my braid was. The scrunchie was putting just enough pressure on my back every time I sat in the car to go anywhere. Since I live out in the middle of nowhere I spend quite a bit of my time sitting in a car driving. I changed the way I wear my hair and after about a week no more pain! Hopefully your sore spot is something just as simple to fix!!

Thanks for the replies!

DressageFancy, unfortunately no, not the scenario as my hair is shoulder length and never braided, always up  But thanks for your thoughts!

My massage therapist has found multiple knots in that area. Oddly enough, it hurts on the top and right side of the bone, and the knots are to the right of it so I think it’s all related.

SpiritHorse: I did read about the possibility of trapped nerves, etc. so I’m sure what you are saying sounds even more possible.

It feels bruised, like Buck described, and also really only on my mind when I accidently lean up against something hard and hit it, or if I feel back there with my fingers and push it, and in exactly the same area as Buck said - right where my bra strap crosses. Only that vertebrae bump - no others. I cannot remember anything traumatic that could have caused it either. That’s why I have waited a few months to even make an appointment, it really doesn’t bother me terribly but it’s annoying, and when I do press it, it really does hurt.

Thank you all so much for your responses.

DON’T GOOGLE IT.

Definitely get it checked out and everything, but in the meantime, I think googling symptoms can be way scary unnecessarily. I don’t like to google until I have a diagnosis.

You are right  My Mom tells me this and I am the worst person to google. Cancer, tumors, ahhhhhh  I’m so bad. Thanks for the reminder:)

Interesting… I have a spine bone that has hurt as you described ever since I was in a car accident 13 years ago where I sustained a whiplash injury (at least I never noticed it before then). The physio I saw at the time was the one to point it out - I’ve never had any therapist ever press on the spine like that since. Whenever I press on it it hurts. I also have some back\headache issues that are always exasperated when my horse tries to toss me (bucking = whiplash (again!))

Even my husband’s spine doctor said this when he was studying his xrays after his horse accident. He was talking to another doctor mentioning all these complicated words, and then turned to my husband and said “DON’T go home and google this, you’ll just worry yourself!!” Of course he went home and googled away. And was worried sick for weeks.

-raises hand-

i had a sore spinal process many yrs ago; when it finally got to the point where it hurt for me to sit in my office chair and lean back, i broke down and went to the orthopod for xrays. he couldn’t see anything, and diagnosed a bone bruise. asked me if i’d ever fallen or anything. i said “well yeah i came off this horse over a jump and body slammed onto the arena on my back…but that was MONTHS and MONTHS ago–!” and he just nodded sagely.

prescribed a couple months of PT at a sports medicine place (which was damned painful, i might add) but it really did clear it up. i had a twinge or two in the year or so following, but i’ve been keeping up on the exercises the PT gave me and no trouble recently.

I have this, about a month ago i came off my horse and landed on my back and it hurt like the dickens,so much in fact i couldn’t move my legs for like ten minutes after my fall…Fast forward to a month later,my swelling is still there (but going down SLOWLY) and the pain in my back is mostly gone, the only time i really feel it is when i lean up against something and like you said,it feels like its bruised or something.

Result?

Hi Nanerpus,

I have word for word exactly the pain you’re describing. Did you get a result after visiting the doctor? Would be keen to hear! I am like you and googling which has done nothing for my nerves…

Thanks for any information you may have!

I fell on a ceramic floor a few days ago and landed on my back. Very painful. I had tenderness over some places on my spine. Dr. ordered X-rays, which show evidence of compression fracture at two vertebrae. Probably not what you want to hear. It will take at least several weeks to heal, I’m told. But I am over 50.

I have been experiencing this EXACT thing for weeks and I would really love to hear what your doctor ended up telling you it was! Please, do tell!!

cflatt, this thread is years old and the original poster hasn’t been on here in years, either. read thru the responses, but you may just have to get checked out by your doc.

have you done anything obvious, like get thrown from a horse?

Any answers yet?

Hi there! Exact. Same. Problem. Absolutely no injury, no pulled muscles or anything,…just shooting pain if I lean back onto a hard surface. Midback, around the location of my bra strap.

Feel like I’ve been ignored by doctors who brush it off.

Has anyone figured this out yet?

Thanks!!!

I had one sore vertebra or space between the bones for about two years following the birth of my son. I eventually had it checked out and an xray showed nothing wrong. It got better on its own.

Maybe it’s our bra straps

I’ve had the same thing for about 6 months. Had an xray, which showed nothing. Stupidly googled it, saw the word ‘tumor’ and decided to stop googling! I seem to have knots around the area on the right side of my back and the feeling of a tender bruise to the right of my T12 spine, (which is I suppose around the bra strap area)…I just moved to another province and it could take over a year to get my own doctor. Hoping this goes away on it’s own and that everything’s ok…

Check with your doctor a single casual checkup will solve all your questions ad its necessary to find whats the reason behind the pain. Hope you are doing well.
