palomino questions...

So while I wasn’t looking for one, I bought a palomino early last summer. He was stunning, dark, dappled and shiny. He did fade over summer and has a very pale winter coat. I’ve been feeding paprika since January and he’s starting to lose a bit of his winter hair - slowly, I’m in WI - but I see no signs of his previous dark gold coat. He gets TC 30% ration balancer and flax seed along with alfalfa mix hay. Is it just too early or is he just going to be tan from now on? Yuck!

He’ll most likely get there. I had a gorgeous palomino pony who turned shock white over winter, and then back to palomino by May or so.

He will be darker in the summer, but you won’t see this until you get full short summer hair. His winter fuzz will not darken.

I have a dark palomino. When his summer coat comes in he is pretty much orange, he’s so dark. He does fade some during the summer but still stays a deep, rich color. In the winter he is considerably lighter - more of a light gold, usually with dapples. Be patient.

I also feed TC 30% and I add Omega Horseshine. I have found that his coat looks better on the Horseshine than on just flax. I have no idea why.

You need to send him to me to get that golden color back!!!

And will you promise to send him back afterwards?? If so, I can send all three of my horses to you every winter and you can make sure they are all fat and shiny come spring! Thanks in advance!

Ha! Ha! ^^^^ That’s funny. Wonder if she takes people too

YES! She says she’s on a beach somewhere and I’m in WI! No brainer - gotta go start packing

Most palominos and buckskins have a darker Summer and lighter Winter coat. The issue of fading is something you can search hear on, and almost always involves needing extra copper and zinc.

Given where you are, you’re just in the early stages of the honest to goodness changing of the coats. I’d bet in another 2-4 weeks you’ll start seeing a big difference. Enough of the old, lighter and faded Winter coat will be gone, and more of the new, darker Summer coat will be longer and more visible.

My front door is usually unlocked, and bar donations are much appreciated. Text me and I will give you my longitude and latitude!!!

My pally turns really light colored over winter. Then sheds out to a darker palomino come mid april first part of may. Then fades out over the summer months.

I’m getting gobs of very light hair off my Swedish Blonde. The new grooming tools are making it much easier this year (Groom Ninja/SleekEZ).

His summer coat has dark dapples and points, and a more dark gold color. I can easily see where we still have winter fuzz to shed out.

What others said, they tend to be lighter in their winter coats. Some are almost white in the winter, yet nicely gold in the summer.

Mine is in my icon. That photo was taken in mid October a few years ago, so she had an in between coat. That’s her natural coat; I don’t clip her. She’s a deep pumpkin color in the summer, but quite a bit lighter in the winter, with a lot of white hairs in her coat. She’s in between right now, and I don’t expect her to have her full summer color for another few weeks.

@quietann She is just gorgeous!

It’s her job to be beautiful. Well, her other job is emptying my purse… She’s a very good girl.

I had a palomino Walker that in the winter was an Isabella (almost white/cremello) and in the summer the color of newly minted gold Double Eagle. Our Marchador stallion was palomino and stayed that way all year 'round.

Every horse has, as their primary purpose in life, the draining of their owner’s bank account!!!

Yep - mine is white in the winter and gold in the summer:
