is Panacur safe for cats?
bump: anyone?
It’s use in cats is considered ‘off label’ as the drug is not approved for use in this species. It is however often used in cats as it is a safe and effective treatment for giardia. We really do not have any on label drug to treat cats for giardia. Panacur (fenbendazole) is also a good dewormer for cats but other approved drugs (for cats) are available. Safety studies done on cats given fenbendazole showed very low toxicity and it is generally considered safe.
Dosage?
This is a very good question!
Ancedotal: my little guy got dosages of fenbendazole when they were trying to figure out his stomach issues when he was a wee one (suspected giardia case). The only downside to it is that it has to be refrigerated and I could tell he wasn’t impressed with getting something cold squirted into his mouth. My vet gave me preloaded syringes with a very tiny amount (like .3cc for a 2lb kitten) to give him once a day over three days or so.
It seemed to do the trick for him.
I’ve used it pet vet advice when we were trying to rule out lungworm as a cause for my cat’s coughing. I had it compounded into a very concentrated flavored liquid and we gave all cats (11 in total- it was super fun) fenbendazole once daily for 5 days. I believe the dosage is 50mg/kg
