Parking?

There’s a difference between a facility that is prepared to have torrential rain, and huge crowds, and one that has never dealt with it. I bring a ton of clothes and shoes with me to Rolex for that exact reason. And heavy sweatshirts. And sunblock. I’ve seen it all.

I really, REALLY want Tryon WEG to be a success. Other than the parking situation (getting out of it) and the insane prices for any food or drinks and not being allowed to bring your own drinks (even water) in - I loved Kentucky 2010. Unless you’ve seen the truly best in the world (regardless of discipline) in person - it’s hard to appreciate how magnificent they are.

I don’t want WEG to disappear due to the logistics. I’m torn regarding the idea of rotating between a couple of locations. The issues that come from having it at a site that is not prepared for the size of the event vs. spreading it around the world is a real issue for me.

You would think they would have consulted KHP. I too, bring all kinds of clothes to Rolex including my Dubarry’s!
I only wish people thought about studying the successful ones. Especially, Aachen… UGH

A friend who is going to WEG just posted this on her FB:

For those of my friends attending WEG, this is information they sent in response to my request for info on parking/shuttles and what we can bring through gate:

If you come by car, all parking will be 5 miles off site at 6985 NC 9, Columbus, NC. Guests will be shuttled or bused onto show grounds from there. There will be a charge for parking, and more information about these fees will be available on our WEG web site (www.tryon2018.com) when we get closer to the games. (Approximately $10-$20 a day)
I do not know how long the commute will be, something of this magnitude has never been done in Western North Carolina before.
As far as what to bring into WEG, there will be an email going out in the next few weeks that will address all of this, then it will be available on our WEG web site. I can tell you that this event is a “Clear-Bag” event, more details will be in the email about what is allowed into show grounds.

Uh, clear bag? Does this mean they’ll be checking purses and bags or will they really expect us to carry only clear bags? So not happy if it’s the latter…

I wonder how many of these shuttles are going to be wheelchair accessible??

I have an extreme food allergy and already have a cooler backpack because I’ll need to carry all of my food and water for the entire day. There is no way I’ll be making it with a clear bag only each day. We’re so close to the event why can’t they get this information out now???

if I remember correctly - we weren’t allowed to carry any outside food or beverage into KHP in 2010 . I remember them going through bags (though not in great detail) so you could get away with burying a water bottle, but not a whole day’s worth of food.

@stargzng386 Were I you - I would get in contact with someone from the organizers and clarify if this is going to be the case at Tryon and if so - if there is a possibility for an exemption based on your allergies.

I do hope this doesn’t mean that those of us who carry refillable water bottles and prefer not to spend half our day in a never-ending concession line for fast food are out of luck.

I sent an email but will try to call asap. I literally can only drink one brand of bottled water (That they will not carry) or else I can go into anaphylactic shock and end up in the ER. I assumed it would be like Rolex where you could actually bring stuff in. I already have 2.5k sunk into this trip and have been counting down for over a year but I will be risking my life if I can’t bring water and food because of the length of the days.

That’s what I remember as well, though they didn’t check super carefully. We got water in, along with bananas, apples, and the occasional bagel pilfered from the hotel breakfast. They looked in the bags I i know they saw food, but they let us in. Our strategy was to eat a large breakfast, survive at KHP mostly only our smuggled food, and then go out for an early dinner.

Hella hot weather, paying out the rear for parking, shuttling 5 miles each direction, having to pay for overpriced bottled water to go straight into the landfill, nothing to eat since TIEC isn’t vegan accommodating, and apparently my sister is SOL for bringing her camera since there is no way on earth she’s tossing a $10,000 camera in a clear tote.

Soooo glad I’m taking a week of vacation for this :dead:

Don’t worry, GraceLikeRain, I don’t think that $10K camera is going to be allowed anyways. I just received an email (I’m sure we all received it) as to the allowed/not allowed. No cameras with lenses over 35 mm? So, are they really telling me I couldn’t bring a camera with a basic generic 50 mm lense (which is often a standard basic length lens usually included with a basic camera. I understand them not aallowing the huge zoom/fixed length professional lenses that can cost five figures, but really, nothing larger than 35mm?

Also, general parking is $20/vehicle/day and $50/HOV (vehicle holding 15 or more persons)/day.

Here is a link to the “do’s and don’ts”… http://files.constantcontact.com/617…398a7d9e37.pdf

I suspect my friend and I are going to be spending a whole lot less time at TIEC than originally planned. We are staying in Ashville and will probably spending more of our time hiking in the area. Any recommendations from day hikers familiar with the area?

Will the lens size apply to a point and shoot? I’m now thinking I need to go out and get a point and shoot with the best zoom possible to get any pics even though I just bought a $$$ mirrorless camera and took classes to take to WEG because I wanted to get pics. No extreme lens just a normal one but 35mm is basically a portrait lens and will be useless.

I have a second home about two miles from the designated spectator parking for WEG, and let me tell you, there is NO WAY the roads (NC 9 and Landrum Road (14) can handle this kind of traffic. These are both 2 lane country road with a blinking light at the intersection! I’m sure that there will be traffic control, but my husband and I are seriously considering riding our bikes to the parking lot, Speaking of parking lot, I have been to the steeple race course and it will accommodate 5,000 cars max. And the “lot” is a grass. Hopefully, it won’t rain too much, but we have had a record amount of rain this year. Why in the world TIEC didn’t plan for several parking lots, located closer to major highways (say Highway 74, which is a four lane divided highway is beyond me. Yes, I realize that they don’t necessarily own property but how about leasing some for a parking lot? Spectators will have no choice but to drive down either NC 9 or 14 to access the lot. Our home is only accessible off of Route 9, so we are seriously worried about accessing our home due to traffic jams on NC 9. This is a potential cluster f**k

We always took the shuttle buses directly from the hotels in Lexington during WEG and that worked really great.

We did too. The difference is I am not aware that there will be any shuttle buses from hotels to TIEC for WEG this year, which means everyone will have to drive to the only designated parking lot which is accessed off a 2 lane country highway. Like I said, this is likely to be a cluster f**k.

Unfortunately, we were not in one of the favored hotels. That would have made life much simpler. We had the whole shuttle thing figured out pretty well by the end though.

So the complaints about the security measures worked. Time for everyone to keep messaging/posting directly to them about the parking concerns.

I would love to be able to park somewhere and ride my bike in. Unfortunately, I’m staying in Hendersonville, and that’d be a helluva bike ride.

I live just east of Asheville. Craggy Gardens off the parkway is a nice hike and great views from the top. Mt. Mitchell is north of Craggy on the parkway and is divine to go to because of the cooler temps and the views. There are several different hikes you can do there.

Dupont State Forest,Hendersonville, has some great hiking and gorgeous waterfalls. It’s well worth the drive. Along Hwy 276, there is Looking Glass Falls but it’s usually packed. Still worth it though. There are many picnic areas along 276 with grills, tables and most are beside the river.
