Partnership Recommendations: KY?

I guess the title says it all. I’d like to buy a share in a partnership, preferably based on the Kentucky circuit so I can attend races. I am looking to keep it under $5000 for the year (well under that limit if possible), which seems plausible from my research.

I was formerly heavily involved in racing when I lived on the East Coast… but I’m virtually clueless about partnerships.

I’m hoping to find a group that is horse-friendly, newbie-friendly, and won’t just take me and my money for a ride. Bonus points if they let you be hands on at all and allow occasional track visits, etc. I’ve heard stories of partnerships where they take your money and run and the only communication you ever receive is a quarterly bill-- that is what I’d like to avoid!

Team Valor races in Kentucky, as does another big one whose name is escaping me. I will keep thinking…
The bigger ones seem fairly reputable (?)

I met Barry Irwin a few times in my racing days and yeeeah… I’d like to avoid that route.

Most of the “big” partnerships (Team Valor, West Point, etc) are going to be outside my budget. I’m looking for something more affordable and homegrown. I really don’t care about big races or fame. I just want a part in a race horse that is well cared for and that I can root for when he runs.

I’m not sure how much they run in ky, but I have been very impressed with horse players racing club. It sounds like they are exactly what you are looking for. They have 60 horses scattered across the country. I will find you a link to contact Scott

Ah, gotcha. I don’t have much of a connection to KY, but I know some guys in smaller syndicates in CA. I’ll ask if they have any recommendations.
I’m not quite sure how it works in smaller syndicates though; I’m assuming they have fewer partners on each horse, which would make things more expensive…no?

Thanks! I’ll check them out!

Thanks for the input! The “smaller” partnerships aren’t smaller in number of shares per horse-- they’re just investing in less expensive horses. Actually they often have more shares available per horse to make them more affordable. I just don’t know who I can trust, ya know?

I don’t know what the buy-in costs would be for the Bourbon Lane Stable partnership but I do know the principals and they are people I would work with. They are also Kentucky based. So this might be one to consider:

They look GREAT, although I saw online that they have a $10K investment minimum which means no go for me! Bummer!

Thanks!!! I shot them an email since they mention partnerships in Kentucky but don’t appear to have any at this time. Maybe they’ll have something if they have enough interest…

Scott from the Horse Racing Players Club contacted me very promptly, but unfortunately they do not have anything in KY.

I’m wondering if I’m going about this the wrong way- should I be contacting the tracks or even the trainers directly about possible syndications?

You might check with the breeders association. Granted we are MUCH smaller, but we do keep contact numbers for all the syndicates that we know of

My neighbor has a stake in ‘Dare To Dream Stables’ which is mostly in Illinois but does send runners to Kentucky, Oaklawn, and NYRA tracks and so forth.

A bit of a rarity (vs. typical races) will be one of their runners expected to start in a Grade 3 race (25th edition of the Chicago Handicap) at Arlington Park this weekend.

Mike from dare to dream is a good guy. When i was working at victory haven i was taking care of his horses.

I had a neighbor who purchased in the Dogwood Stable partnership, they talked highly of it. I know they are based in Aiken SC, not sure if they race in KY.

Dogwood announced they’ll merge with California-based Eclipse Thoroughbreds July 1st

Existing Dogwood partnerships formed will continue (with Cot) but I’d assume new partnerships will largely fall under the Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners model.

Eclipse now has access to Dogwood’s Aiken facilities and an Southeastern US foothold. They previously just had Ohio and CA locations.

I’ve been looking into Dare to Dream, I’m glad to hear good things about them. They seem to have opportunities in my price range and do have KY based horses on their roster, though none currently available. I think I will contact them.

I know for a fact Dogwood is waaaay outside my price range.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming!

I was going to suggest Eclipse but since their merger they would probably be out of your price range.

Good luck! It’s a pipedream of mine one day to buy into a partnership

The “problem” for me with these big name syndicates is that they purchase expensive horses destined (hopefully) for prestigious races at premier tracks. They limit shares so owners can have a more personal experience… which is great. But I can’t afford 10% of a $60K horse plus overhead plus monthly fees for training at somewhere like Santa Anita at this point in my life.

I have the owner bug and would be happy in a cheap claiming partnership so long as it’s with credible connections. But it seems many of those I’ve found are with @sshats I wouldn’t want to support.

Maybe look into Dream Team Racing. They seem like stand up guys, that care for the horses in the stable. I know they do stable some here in Lexington, so might be right up your alley. The fees seem reasonable as well! Great website, with all of the info your looking for.
